reminding people again that there are still living survivors of the japanese government-sanctioned sex trafficking that occurred during the japanese occupation and invasion of korea. a proper apology from the japanese government is still yet to come. japan, by the way, is a country that ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and is regularly audited by the UN on such topics. the UN told them to reintegrate comfort women into history textbooks. they, to this day, have not. china and the philippines also have yet to receive an apology.

reminding people that during japanese imperialism, the imperialist government claimed that koreans were the same race as japanese, but a backward, dirty, and uncivilized version of them. they claimed their annexation was justified as they would "civilize" an uncivilized people.

reminding people that, under japanese colonial rule, koreans were barred from speaking korean, practicing korean shamanism (a religious and spiritual practice dating back around 3000 B.C.E), and were forced to change their ancestral names to japanese ones.

to this day, people living in japan with korean roots still face stigma.

this was a cultural genocide.

I hate that it's common to only teach about how WW2 affected Westerners and all the war crimes that Germany committed, but nobody ever talks about the atrocities that Japan did to countless asian countries. Nobody ever talks about the Nanjing Massacre, Unit 731, the comfort women, the death railway, and literally dozens upon dozens of other war crimes they've committed. Nobody teaches any of this in their world history classes and it's fucking glossed over all the time, and Japan never even apologise for ANY OF THIS, and some of them TO THIS DAY denied it ever happened. An estimated 30 million people died because of this and not a single "we're sorry" to be seen from them, they don't even teach it in schools.
