the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.
i feel like the Real answer to "how do you have the confidence to make your work without worrying about other people" is "i'm over 30 years old."

I need to rewatch farscape
One thing about Farscape is that it really follows through on a lot of consequences of violence, and I think that's because at the center of the show is a living ship, deliberately created without any means of violence, whose only substantive protection is running away further and faster than anyone else. For a show with space guns, star fighters, intergalactic armadas, and an above average number of planets being destroyed, a whole lot of Farscape's plots revolving around avoiding violence, and the total futility of violence. Two major antagonists both pursue the protagonists with violent actions and intentions, and both are total futile. One blames them for the accidental death of his brother, the other thinks they have important information that none of them could share if they wanted to. When the protagonists resort to violence, the outcomes range from mixed success that creates new and worse problems to purely being a bad decision full stop. There's two whole characters who were child soldiers and they're haunted by the violence of their past, with fragile grips on the tenuous sense of belonging that comes from being stranded with strangers. The whole crew gets a reputation and discover it's a bad thing when anyone, anywhere might assume you're a dangerous violent monster.
And a lot of the ptsd and emotional problems play out in hilarious ways, because that's kind of life, so it never beats you over the head with the idea that everyone is Very Sad, it's just baked into their sharp tempers, sudden flares of emotion, rambling speeches, self destructive behavior and so on. No one has anyone to talk to who hasn't got some kind of thorny, deeply troubled violence both in the text of the show or the past, because it kicks off with a jailbreak. The one calm, therapuetic crew member is like that because it's how she copes with having been a former terrorist and doing shitloads of murders. The action is exciting and interesting but no one has a good outcome form violence. It's just like life for real.
I am so tired of short-attention-span, trim-the-fat culture. All writing advice these days is for how to write like Chuck Palahniuk. "Cut 'think', cut 'feel', cut 'wonder' - only action, only pushing forward, show and move and move and move." What if I could emulate this style, and still don't want to? What if I want to write like Henry James, with three paragraphs of introspective musings between each dialogue line? The music advice is, "make it shortform, make it Tik-Tok compatible, make it punchy, hit the refrain as soon as possible." What if I want that 10-minute prog rock piece? What if I want that symphony? What if I want it slow and luxurious and lazy? Movies. Series. Poetry. Bodies. Everything is "trimmed trimmed trimmed trimmed, stripped bare, you have three seconds to win me over, make it airport chic." I don't want to win you over, then, I guess. I want the fat left it. I want the pleasure and the indolence and the indulgence. Fuck this art-advice that's always "your art needs Ozempic."

There's a certain level of jank in video games that doesn't interrupt your fun even if it breaks something or obstructs you. There's less room to forgive jank with AAA large studios (im looking at you Bethesda), but when you're playing an indie game that's trying to do a lot of complicated things you let stuff slide
im currently playing Vintage Story with some friends. It looks and behaves like minecraft, but really it's a early-modern (think 1600s) survival simulator with weird steampunk science gone wrong themes. it's not groundbreaking but it hits the right notes for me in terms of speed of progress and things to do. and of course, I play with mods (do you... not mod your games?) the vanilla game has a cooking pot that doesn't start "cooking" until the contents in the vessel reach 200 degrees Celsius. If you know anything about cooking and physics you should be immediately terrified, because the temperature that things actually cook is largely dictated by the boiling point of water, which is 100 degrees Celsius at 1 atmosphere of pressure (sea level, abbreviated 1 atm).

If you were to raise a pot of food up to 200 degrees Celsius, you'd need a pressure cooker, which increases the boiling point of water. However, you'd need a pressure cooker that no one in their right mind would put in their home. a stove top pressure cooker cooks at 15 PSI, or 1.02 atm, to raise the boiling point of water to about 121 degrees C.

just about 39 atmospheres. or 571 PSI.
Seems high, but that's not unobtainable with really good equipment irl. For reference, the pressure at the Mariana trench (deepest point of the ocean) is 15,750 PSI, or ~1071 atmospheres of pressure.

I mentioned mods earlier for a reason. We installed some mods because games are more fun with mods. A conflict between two mods: one that changes the speed at which materials heat up, and one that adds a much, much larger cooking vessel, created a minor situation:
I went to make some broth by boiling bones in water. I wanted to make a lot, so I used this modded vessel, which holds 50L of water vs the vanilla cooking pot's 6L.
I tossed the stuff in and lit the fire. The temperature of the water went past 200 degrees Celsius, and did not stop. It topped out at 1100 degrees Celsius.
