Hot Take for the Day: Ianto was at fault for the “are we a couple” argument
They’re in the hospital and Ianto goes “he said ‘you two’ like we’re a couple” and Jack answers with “we are, what’s the problem?”
He literally says we are. He’s acknowledging they’re a couple. To which Ianto then follows with “don’t know, it’s all new to me that’s all.” And I think that answer right there makes Ianto sound like he’s uncomfortable with it. He’s not been in a relationship since Lisa and never with a man, and he answers dont know when asked if there’s a problem. I can imagine Jack is now thinking that the idea of them being a couple really is, for some reason, a problem to Ianto. So what does he do? He backs off. Of course he does, he doesn’t want Ianto to be weird about them. But, also his feelings are probably a bit hurt. Ianto wasn’t meaning it in that way, he obviously just wants some assurance that they are, in fact, together and took Jack’s cautious tone to be as if he was brushing it off. I think that first encounter started this whole miscommunication.
So then when Ianto brings it up again, Jack is like ‘??? We went over this already.’ It obviously bothers him that Ianto finds them being a couple as an uncomfortable thing, so he goes “I never liked the word couple” honestly, he’s probably just being a bit petty because because his feelings are hurt, but then doesn’t really see Ianto’s also being hurt like ‘oh. ok’ because he’s already walked off.
But, the whole reason I think it’s Ianto’s fault, and not Jack, is because the third time it’s brought up, Jack is the one that says “now who’s a couple?” The way he says it sounds like he’s saying ‘hey you were the one who was uncomfortable with us being a couple, why are you acting like one all of the sudden?’
So, that’s why I believe the domestic argument they have in Day One was probably Ianto’s fault and not actually the them refusing to acknowledge they’re boyfriends [ in supplemental canon, they both have used the word boyfriend prior to COE ]. It was just a dumb, average misunderstanding.

“ that’s not how you do that. ”
