Lt. Surge from Pokemon is canonically American and mentions fighting alongside Electric-type Pokemon "in the war".

The Gen 1 games take place in 1996, which means Surge fought in either the Vietnam War (20 years earlier) or the Gulf War (5 years earlier)

He has no canonical age but if the commonly-cited age range of late 30s to early 40s is true, then Vietnam is the more likely option. He would've enlisted at 18 and fought in Vietnam near the end of the war just prior to American withdrawal.
