Yep, it was Thursday. And Mr. C reminded me that nobody had made any pea soup around here for a while. I had to take up the truly Swedabilly challenge.
More definite Swedabilly fare in the works for tomorrow here.
In this case: Crock Pot pea soup and cornbread!
Pea soup on Thursday has been a tradition in Sweden since the Middle Ages. It stems from the Friday fasting historically observed by the Rom
It ain't Thursday, but we'll live.
I got the urge for pinto beans again, but I know the Household Swede is not exactly crazy about that staff of life. Though he does greatly appreciate his ärtsoppa. We also currently have more dry peas than pintos--plus still some of the Christmas ham leftovers in the freezer. So, why not? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's not brown beans, but it is pretty much the local equivalent.
Cornbread is also miles better to go with any kind of soupy stewy dish than crepe-type pancakes. Fight me. 😈 Even some version cobbled together out of less than ideal ingredient availability.
Being the heathen I am? This time I also can't resist also throwing some celery and carrot into the soup.
I've made pressure cooker versions before, but not slow cooker. Neither appliance seems to be nearly as popular as some other places, so I thought to take a cue from a few British slow cooker mushy peas recipes and go ahead and soak these in advance like usual today instead of just chucking the dry peas in to cook. Whether they're green or yellow dried whole peas doesn't really matter; they both do normally want an awful lot of soaking (with soda) to soften up compared to "normal" beans. Can't really overcook peas in soup anyway, so it really shouldn't hurt anything even if the soak isn't really necessary here after all.
It should also hopefully drain off some of the gas-producing compounds. Even if Mr. C insists that the peas MUST be cooked in the soaking water for full flavor. 😵 (Haven't seen other people here say to do that. It seems to be mostly him.)
So yeah, the plan is to drain them and set the soup to cook before I go to bed like I've been doing with some other stuff lately. Then that just leaves the bread for tomorrow.

"What's the time?"
"It's..."

Yep, speaking of Mr. C's beloved pea soup? That's what I'm making right now. Using (WRONG!) split yellow peas, because we're out of the whole ones and that's what you can sometimes find in stores here. He'd apparently rather have yellow split than the whole green ones like they use for mushy peas here. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyway, of course I had to pea soup in the Instant Pot! 😊 Using a mashup of these recipes.
Blötlägg ärtorna dagen innan och häll bort blötläggningsvattnet innan tillagningen.
Super easy to make! Heart-Warming Rich Split Pea & Ham Soup done in an hour with 10 simple ingredients. Filling, flavorful, frugal soup!
Well, more swapping the basic cooking instructions around.
I'm also having to use some chopped up raw ham steaks fried in with the onions at the start, since we don't have anything resembling a ham hock.
At least without finding an actual butcher shop that sells some version of that. Which I actually finally did, out of curiosity! 👍 Along with some other hopefully suitable cured hog parts, and they're just up the road! Maybe in time for my next pot of pinto beans, which will hopefully be soon.
But, this should work fine. It also has some veggie bouillon in there for extra flavor.

A beloved Swedish classic
Soldier's Pea Soup
(With sustainably grown Swedish peas)
Because nobody really felt like cooking, and it's Thursday.
Pea soup on Thursday has been a tradition in Sweden since the Middle Ages. It stems from the Friday fasting historically observed by the Rom
Anyway, trying to get some whole dried yellow peas for soup was actually what prompted him to make a ScandiKitchen order when things started getting crazy. I wanted to stock up on cornmeal, and I guess that's a close enough Swedish equivalent--because everywhere seemed to be sold out of the peas too! 🙃
He did manage to score a couple of cans of soup, however. And that's what we ate tonight. One of those cans makes two decent-sized bowls worth, but we ended up needing both.
It's...pea soupy, and pretty good for canned! But, Knorr.
We did not have Swedish crêpe type pancakes with jam to go with the Thursday night soup, because nobody wanted to make them. I did make some cheese toasties on the side. Not the same, but it works. (He has also never wanted to make the pancakes when he's made homemade soup, so I've never actually had the full classic combo.)
Even after asking him about it, it's still not clear why that particular brand is Soldier's Pea Soup, or why they thought that might be an effective marketing strategy. Though it evidently was, since it's an old classic brand from well before Knorr bought them out and kept the brand name.
The best he could come up with was that the army does, indeed, serve a lot of pea soup every Thursday. I wouldn't necessarily expect that association to help them much, but he also said that the mess hall food he got was pretty good. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
