One area where I feel like modern storytelling has let us down is this:

Sometimes you have to choose between evils.

I'm not talking about "situations in which it is unclear who is actually the villain" -- IMO there are too many of those stories recently -- but stories where it's clear that the good guys have no good options. Where the only choice you can make is the wrong one, because all of the choices are wrong, because not choosing is also a choice. Where the best you can do is to choose the lesser evil, or maybe, the greater good.

Because the preponderance of stories in which the hero, through virtue of his heroism, manages to make a good choice appear when the narrative has set him up to fail leads people to have little or no framework for making such a choice.

Because -- and let me be painfully clear about this -- in life there is often no good choice. The best you can hope for is the lesser evil.

But too many people have a moral framework wherein only bad people can choose a bad option, so when only bad options present themselves, people...... don't choose? Which is also a choice, and usually a worse one. Or they insist that if people only try hard enough, are "good" enough, then a good choice will present itself.

Most of the time, that doesn't happen. Most of the time, you have to choose harm reduction over harm abolition, and wishing the world were different, were better, means the world just gets worse while you sit around waiting.

I don't need anybody else's work put down for the sake of lifting my work up. I am fully aware of this show's flaws. But everything I write and draw are made with the intention of highlighting and bringing forward its charms that I have come to love. I dont pull those ideas out of nowhere. They're FANarts and FANfics. I've got a source material that i like to stick closely to.

So if you're just gonna leave backhanded compliments, I don't want it.

It's also worth noting that Hayden apologizes immediately when Shane calls him out on his attitude towards Ilya, acknowledges that Shane must love Ilya a lot, guards the door so Shane and Ilya could have a moment before and after the press conference in the epilogue. After a 2 year time jump, Hayden brings up parenthood to Shane and tells Shane that he thinks Ilya would make a good father! Shane hadn't even asked! Hayden requires no prompting to understand that Ilya is GOOD once he's given the time to get to know Ilya. He trusts his children around Ilya. As a parent, you don't just DO that with anyone. He offers to marry Shane and Ilya. He wants to be Shane's best man! Hayden does come around on Ilya. It's not homophobic to dislike someone who's given you every reason to dislike them imo. He's not a perfect ally. He makes mistakes, stupid ones. He's an ass sometimes. But he's also the only one who's standing up for Shane after The Trip™. One thing about Hayden, at least my interpretation from the books, is that he will always show up for Shane. And I understand why people think he's unsupportive of Shane and Ilya when he doesn't tell JJ off for trying to set Shane up but like. What was he supposed to say (that presumably hadn't been said already) without giving them away? (Hayden telling Shane he could do better was a joke it's literally in the next line)

Anyway I'm a little sick of all the Hayden slander I'm not gonna lie. Like of course yes headcanon away all you want, that's literally what fanfiction is for! But when it bleeds into the canon interpretation of characters it does bother me a tiny bit.

it really just feels like to me (to ME!! NOT WORD OF GOD! TO ME!) that there's a tendency to reduce him to just shitty forever because he and ilya got off to a rough start and everyone loves ilya (which i get! i also love ilya!) so automatically hate him for butting heads with him when in reality. like. yeah he didn't like ilya. he only knew him as rozanov and ilya responding to that dislike just made him act more rozanov around him.

and it's not that either of them is right. they're just equally not wrong. like sometimes in situations there's no central one person who is good and one who is bad. people are really complex and reorienting your entire worldview on someone when they're not initially offering you any evidence that you're wrong is really hard.

but it does change! i think the ilya looking at shane with heart eyes line is even from hayden if i'm not wrong.

i just don't think it's wrong or a character flaw to be wary of someone your best friend is dating if your only interactions with him for YEARS have been negative AND you've heard your best friend say that this person was an ass to them specifically. the way it comes out isn't necessarily great (and again! because ilya is playing into it as well! which i don't blame him for because hayden very obviously doesn't think he should be with shane so of course ilya gets prickly and defaults back to a persona that's a shield in a lot of ways), but i think (*i* think) that tbh? hayden would have been a bad friend if he HAD been immediately on board with no hesitations at all.

Nobility is bullshit by birth and authority must be revocable, like, they like Cedar but they think that Cedar's blind love of the Druskenvalds is an illness that could stand to be cured. Saint knows how badly people in a position of even minor power can act, and how that can fuck up a lot of lives. They've yet to meet a noble they like.

I don't wanna give all their name away, but they weren't lying when they said Saint was part of their name-- it's just part of their last name. Their first name is both very precious to them and something that they really don't want to hear anymore. It would hurt too much. But it's GONNA come out.

What is your character’s guiltiest pleasure? :)

The serious answer is 'the kind of magic they're best at' which is part of their whole. Y'know. Deal. But that also manifests a lot in just-- by god they love getting attention. They LOVE getting all of someone's focus. And they really love the feeling of being GOOD at something and getting recognized for it.

(The one that will come up the soonest is probably sweets, though. Saint has a MASSIVE sweet tooth and that's just. That's just indulgent. They weren't kidding when they said that an Ice Cream Sundae is heaven.)

This skip divorce bs is also just really highlighting for me the growing discomfort I've been feeling about how a section of the fandom speaks about Scott and Skip in the face of Scott's openly bisexual actor talking multiple times about how much he relates to Scott and how he spent so many years closeted and the victim of homophobia and enduring the fear of what being queer means for his professional life and everything it's cost him, and how that makes Scott so familiar and precious to him.

But no, apparently Skip are straight coded. They're toned down to be palatable to the more homophobic viewers. It's totally the characters/writers/actor's fault that you're all but calling one of them the woman in the relationship.

(plus, like, we've all seen how faaaaar too many of you speak about Francois. You're not slick)
