What do you think about TV!Arya ?

Oh, well, like with every asoiaf character, I’m afraid show!Arya has lost many nuances of the book counterpart. Also, I have this feeling that D&D don’t truly understand her? I’m not an expert at all, but I have the feeling they like her but don’t truly get all the conflicting things that make Arya who she is. They stick to the superficial layer, and don’t go deeper than that, imho. So, everytime they stray from the book’s plotline, they mess her characterization up and simplify her, in a sense —which, again, happens with pretty much all characters, and I think it’s unavoidable to some extent.

I guess a good example of this lack of depth could be her time at Harrenhal: in the books, Arya goes truly through hell there, and is little more than a slave who lives in constant fear of being hurt, raped, or killed. Those chapters are defining for her, I think, because she’s witness to the horrors of war in her own person. She also sees horrors from both sides: the Lannister and her brother’s men. In the show, she’s a cupbearer who feel safe enough to joke and sass with his master, Tywin. All the pain and horror in book!Arya plot gets washed over (don’t get me wrong, tho, Maisie Williams and Charles Dance are a delight to watch on those scenes, and, if I see those scenes from a show only point of view, they are so great. The thing that bothers me is the fact that they diminish Arya’s character development in a sense.)

So I guess those are my main “complaints” with regards to Arya: oversimplifiation of her development and some problems in the characterization. Another example could be Arya saying that “girls are stupid” (when book!Arya has no problem with being a girl, and would never say anything like that. I mean: “the woman is important too”).

But I’m hardly an expert on Arya (or any other character, for that matter, lol), I’d personally suggest you to ask donewithwoodenteeth and/or celiatully which are my personal references when it comes to Arya, and I’m sure will have more collected and intelligent thoughts on this :)
