Robby is aware of the fact that he sees Dennis as a replacement son.

Losing the relationship he had built with Jake has changed him, taking away one of the few good, pure things in his life.

He misses feeling like he has an impact on a persons life, not like the med students and residents that will leave and overtake him. Not like the seven-week-itches that he´s rapidly growing tired off, or the patients that pass through rapidly.

He wants to clean his bloody hands an teach something other than preventing death. Wants to take smaller hands in his and show them how to hold a fishing rod or a baseball bat.

Wants to take awkward family pictures to put in his wallet. Wants to be remembered as something other than Doctor Robby.

So when Dennis Whitaker walks into his life, he sees opportunity and takes it.

It´s more than mentorship, his desire to help the younger man seeping into their private lives. Teaching him about intubation turns into telling him the best stores for solid shoes, turns into giving him pocket money.

He overhears Dennis talking about how he was never taught to shave and has to keep himself from offering to show him how.

The young man is just so malleable, so young and unmarred by life, an innocent soul that has imprinted on Robby.

The older man knows Dennis sees him as something special too. Can see it in the admiring glances, in the clear desire to please him, to earn praise and the increasingly common fist bump.

Robby wishes he could ruffle the boy´s hair and tell him how proud he is of his growth.

He´s planning on asking Dennis to go fishing with him sometime during his sabbatical. He already knows he can´t wait three months to see the boy again.

So when Robby wakes up the morning after Javadi´s birthday party naked and next to the boy he thought he saw as a son, his world shatters again.
