Audio Drama Sunday - 12 April
I went to see Hadestown with a friend yesterday! I cried in the stalls. Even though I knew the ending. I hope you had the opportunity to see a friend or watch something cool this week.
🪑 Strangers On A Bench — EPISODE 71: All Plumbers Are Philosophers - EPISODE 72: Just Ask The Trees: it’s a non-fiction podcast, but it’s got similar vibes to Clinical Space or Travelling Light, so hear me out. Every episode, the host starts a conversation with a random, unnamed stranger sitting on a park bench. Episode 71 is about a college student who likes philosophy and weekly ramen-and-movie nights with friends. Episode 72 is about a woman who worked in finance, quit, got diagnosed with cancer, and now takes life slowly by talking to trees. It’s always important to remember that everyone you talk to has something valuable to say, and something they know more about than you, and Strangers On a Bench highlights this.
🐍 @monstrousproductions’ The Lion and the Adder — The Detective: Eira Major mention! This minisode has got me so hyped. The voices, the sound design, the character dynamics are just peak.
📚 The Book Club — The Secret History: Dark Academia, Greek Myth, and Murder: confession time: I haven’t read The Secret History. On the other hand, I now want to. This episode talks about classic literature, class and Donna Tart. It’s entertaining to listen to, it teaches you about books, and even though I didn’t buy The Secret History, I did pick up the dark academia Plain Bad Heroines from an LGBT+ bookshop this week, so it was kind of inspirational. If you want to read more this year, check out The Book Club for sure.
🕳️ I Found a Wormhole — 1. Wormholes and Plumbing — 5. Rocks & Paper: okay, the ending in this podcast was a surprise. But the actual serious science research in the beginning was great! It felt a lot heavier on the sci-side of sci-fi, which is cool. Do all those scientific trials count as foreshadowing?
👁️ @augustyearroundprod’s (Un)likeminded — Imposter Syndrome: a space alien is given the job of taking the body of a normal human woman. It’s a fun idea and it’s interesting listening to something gain empathy for humans even when it doesn’t really speak to them.
🧝♀️ G.O.B.L.I.N.S — Episode 1 - Pilot: another series to really look forward to! Made by the brilliant team behind Stellar Firma, this podcast is about an unlucky council worker who gets kidnapped by goblins (about 5 minutes into her job on the Cissbury Ring Bypass). She has one shot to return to the human world, but if anyone discovers her before then, they’ll kill her… eventually. The characters are all so funny, their voices are so memorable, and the idea that elves have a glamour that makes them breathtakingly attractive to humans but doesn’t work on goblins is hilarious. I need this podcast in my life.
