to me piper and shel’s meet cute goes like this: the mcleans’ property (huge) neighbors shel’s grandma’s ranch and during the drop of an oklahoman nighttime tornado watch in the area shel + her family are herding all the cattle to safety. one strays off and shel recklessly follows it on her horse but the weather gets worse and her horse kicks her off. the wind is bearing down on her face. she’s injured her leg. in the distance, through the blistering winds, a girl in her nightclothes stands alone in the raging wheat field petting shel’s old dairy calf. she smiles sadly at the greying clouds, the kind of smile that normally comes with a goodbye. shel feels her heart thump wildly to the rhythm of the rain.
