“You’re not…” Jemma’s throat closes before she can finish the question.

“Not what?” There’s a challenge in his rough voice. Perhaps she shouldn’t answer it by looking at his hands. Surely he can see on her face that she’s thinking of the wolves. His eyes burn and she can’t help but cringe back a step. “Not human?” he asks, lips curling in a dangerous smile.

“Not going to kill me?”

The fire in his eyes ebbs but there’s nothing cool about the look in them.

“F-for going into the west wing? And running away?” In less than twenty-four hours she’s broken every rule he’s given her and he made it clear when her imprisonment here began that the punishment for transgressions would be (her eyes trail to his hands again and the howls of the wolves echo in her ears) dire.

She's frozen as his hand lifts to brush her loose hair behind her ear. His touch doesn’t burn her, not the way it did the wolves. She shivers.
