how did your mother die :-?

E: I’m uhm…not sure how it happened the first time. But I brought her back when it did. She uh…she kissed me later that night and died the second time I guess and I couldn’t bring her back. I spent the night at Jared’s that night he…h-his mom died the same day.

Jack hated being away. It was killing him and Gwen, she wasn’t going to say it but she really needed her best friend. He wanted to go back but there was just too much pain.

They took to phone calls while he was hopping around from planet to planet. He never stayed long enough in a place to feel like home. Until Gwen talked to him about how she started showing. He found a crappy little place on a planet that he couldn’t even pronounce the name of and took some parts around to make a portable video calling display.

There wasn’t a day that the captain hadn’t wished to really be there to see. Gwen had really started to show and she couldn’t have been any more beautiful. He wanted to be there when she cried or needed craving food. He also wanted to see Rhys’ stupid face through out the whole thing. Of course he was mad, madder than a bull at the sounds of what his best friend said, since not long before all this she didn’t want kids. It wasn’t like she didn’t want any children with her husband but two people in her life that she loved almost as much needed help, she wanted to do this for them.

Though that didn’t make it any better, Ianto was okay but Jack? No. Just the thought seemed to make Rhys foam at the mouth in rage. The captain had a choice few moments where he hears their fights and had to sooth Gwen. What he wouldn’t give to be there to hold her through the tears. Once or twice he thought about going back. It wouldn’t get any farther than him getting ready to board a ship straight for the Milky Way before he would climb onto another ship. He always claimed he misread the numbers but he really knew why.

Finally he figured out a way to see his best friend without actually being on Earth. He was so appreciative of Toshiko for showing him how to make certain things, or really just souping up one certain thing - computers. Since the Manipulator had similar structures to a computer it didn’t take much for Jack to make a holographic teleportation imaging sensory so he could be on that planet without actually touching the soil.

A shock or three later it the newly created system allowed him to take little peeks at the life of Welshwoman Gwen Cooper. He would keep to the shadowy places, it easily shielded him with how easily the signal seemed to be disrupted and make the hologram disappear. Many times Jack was afraid that he would be caught but she never seemed to see him. It was a little saving grace since that was not the reunion he wanted for them both.

One day Captain Jack Harkness would go back. For now, using a hologram as well as a phone to be in contact with Gwen Cooper was all he needed.
