Always going back and forth between: I wish '03 Lust had melanin she's literally a brown woman :( and well being brought into a new existence as a homunculus strips you of so much of your previous personhood even if you still have little fragments of it and part of that very well Would be her race/ethnicity and culture and Dante is a crusty old white woman who Would do that so
listening to Shallow River by the Crane Wives and thinking about these guys, in a literal sense and a more allegorical one.
ok wait i haven't seen 03 yet (m gonna start after brotherhood) bUT 03 LUST IS LIKE 8??
HAHAHA yes, technically! Don't wanna say too much because I don't know how much would be new spoilers for you, but she was created like 8 years before the show timeline. She had the same appearance and maturity and stuff, as a human adult, though, so she didn't really have to learn how to function in the world.
And you know how in mangahood, Lust is like the leader of the Lust Envy Gluttony trio? Even though Envy's supposed to be the main villain's right hand homunculus, Lust has a similar level of authority as she did in mangahood. Despite being like 8. I think it's hilarious.
Certain Sects of the FMA Fan Community: 03 IS SO SEXIST!!!! IT DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO WRITE WOMEN!!!
Me: Okay, then you have to explain to me why, if 03 is sexist, does it have a female antagonist who is power hungry but also petty?
For that matter, you also need to answer the following questions;
1) Why are both Lust and Sloth so beloved in the 03 fan community?
2) Why is Sloth’s entire arc about how she wants her own identity that does not revolve around being a failed attempt to bring Ed and Al’s mom back to life?
3) Why is Sheska the one who starts investigating the death of Hughes, her boss and someone she’d grown close to? And in doing so, makes her just as essential to uncovering the plot as the main characters do, and in furthering Roy’s own arc on her own terms.
4) Why do Winry and Sheska become friends in the process of investigating Hughes’s murder?
5) Why does Winry actually have more things to do outside of being Ed and Al’s childhood friend and Ed’s love interest?
6) If Riza is just Roy’s love interest then why, outside of the fact that he trusts her to watch his back, is she his bodyguard? For that matter, you also have to answer why she feels like a strong, passionate and realistic woman who just happens to care for/be attracted to her boss? And why she makes it perfectly clear that she is not only capable of making decisions for herself, but also makes it clear that if he wasn’t worth it she’d leave?
7) Why Winry and Riza aren’t moping about in Shamballa despite how obvious it is that they’re waiting for their love interests to come back?
and most importantly;
8) Why is it that Winry, albeit very sadly, let’s Ed go at the end of the movie and it does not break her as a character?
............................................
I’m not trying to argue that 03 is some great feminist work or the like, just that people should really look up the definition of sexism before they start throwing it around like a frisbee.
