Kitsch or there’s no accounting for taste The ten items in my art exhibit. This exhibition explores ideas of kitsch as an aesthetic style that has historically been considered separate to the art world and combines them with Gell’s theories in the anthropology of art. On a personal level these objects were chosen for two reasons: 1) I love kitsch, I appreciate it as an aesthetic style and choose to decorate my room with objects that can be considered kitschy. 2) When researching kitsch I discovered that the literal meaning of the German word is trash. This got me thinking about rubbish and kitsch aesthetics, Gell (1996) describes artlike objects being put in exhibits with artworks and how we must expand our definitions of art in order to avoid ethnocentrism in the anthropology of art. Gell suggests that in order to be anthropologists of art we must become philistines and reject purely aesthetic appreciations. Kitsch as an aesthetic style is specific to a western art world but this exhibition attempts to question that. Returning to the idea of rubbish I realised that the way I treat rubbish is not equal; for example I would throw away a McDonalds box but keep the packaging from Japanese sweets or drinks. I appreciated the designs on the Japanese packaging which to me held a kitsch aesthetic but a British can or wrapper I would throw in the bin straight away. So one aspect of this exhibition is reflecting on my own taste, another is questioning kitsch as a universal aesthetic quality.
