The masks of the commedia dell’arte
LA BAUTA
(From a painting by Uwe Thurnau) This costume, consisting of a black cape with hood on which the tricorn was worn while the face was covered by a characteristic white or sand mask, became very common in the 18th Century, to the point of defining a walking dress in all periods of the year.
“You too.” I admitted with surprising calm that reassured me that I’d somehow covered my tracks.
It was bullshit. Deep down I knew it, but I continued trying to deceive myself that I had complete control over anything having to do with meeting Stan Yeger, and continued to even as a house tour was suggested and the two single guys naturally got grouped together behind everyone else.
There was a split second of hesitation as Trev and Pamela started to lead the group, with both of us motioning and smiling to the other to go first. If I’d had more of my wits about me I might’ve put up a bigger fight for the back, since it would’ve given me an unobserved chance to try to collect myself or admire the view.
But I didn’t, and gave in, setting into motion a pattern of whenever we left a room and headed into a hallway that I would go before him.
If it hadn’t been for the smell of his woodsy cologne tickling my nose, the sound of his shoes rhythmically clicking on the floor behind me or the overwhelming sense, imagined or not, that a pair of eyes were boring into my backside, I could’ve kept my attention on our hosts who pointed out various paintings and knick-knacks in hallways.
My success wasn’t much better in the rooms we visited either. His presence permeated each room we entered, making it impossible to ignore him and it was in Trev’s office, when I knew he was looking at a metal stallion sculpture, that I gave in and snuck a look at him.
It was then that I stopped trying to convince myself that I wasn’t interested. I’d have to be a complete idiot to keep fooling myself. But admitting it didn’t make things any easier because then I had a decision to make: did I want to keep admiring him from a distance or, if by some miracle he hadn’t caught on, did I want to start throwing hints his way that I was interested, knowing that more than likely he would let me know that he wasn’t.
What swayed me to test the waters was what I learned from a conversation that Wes started during dessert.

I was considering ol’ Matrix Head for this one, but decided that, at least as of now, 12 of 12 is way more creepy IMHO. If there’s anything James Roberts is a master of, is creating disturbing and emotionally draining scenarios…
"Let me see your phone." He whispered. I pulled it out and briefly felt the heat of his hand on mine as I placed it in his. He quickly entered the info and held it back out for me to take. When my hand rested on the phone, his fingers closed around mine and my eyes again met his. "Are you sure you're okay?"
I didn't know. My mind was swirling so fast that I didn't know what I was thinking or feeling. Everything was a confusing mess and he was the reason. I took in a deep breath and slowly let it out before placing a fake smile on my lips. "I'm okay. It's been a long day."
I wasn't sure if he completely believed me, but his fingers loosened their grip on my hand and I slowly pulled it away. "I should probably get going. I'm late meeting my friend." He paused and raised an eyebrow at me.
"If you want to talk, you've got my number." I nodded and turned to open my car door. He slowly backed up towards his car and as I pulled away, he waved at me. I gave him a small wave and drove the whole way back to my apartment in a confused daze.
Without thought, I went about doing my normal after game routine; I changed, got myself an iced coffee, but instead of heading over to my laptop, I continued to stand behind the kitchen counter and stare into the living room as I thought about what he had told Tiff. Whenever I do decide to enter the relationship waters again, it won't be for a fling. I don't want that anymore. I want the kind of relationship that my brothers and sister have; that my parents had and your parents have. . .
I had tried to ignore the thought that kept creeping into my mind from the moment I heard his words; the thought that made no sense especially since his words should have convinced me that the opposite was true. But as I stood in my apartment with only the sound of the ticking clock to offer a distraction, I couldn’t stop the thought from invading my mind.
I wanted the run ins, the teasings, the smiles, and the reassuring touches to mean something. And even though his words to Tiff had said the opposite and I knew he should think of nothing else but his recovery and career, a part of me hoped that the person he was describing to Tiff, the person that he could have that relationship with, could be me.
