3/25/17
The end is nigh. 17.5, the last of the 5 Crossfit Open workouts, has arrived, and it’s time for me to give it my best shot. Here we go!
TEN ROUNDS FOR TIME:
9 x 95lb Thrusters
35 x Double-Unders
RESULT: 25:20 Min. I’m really happy with this! Finally, after four workouts that either didn’t pan out according to my game plan, or had me screwing up in places I should have succeeded (hello, missed 95lb snatch), 17.5 all of the pieces seemed to come together and I managed to properly, adequately suffer. Look, my time isn’t a rockstar by anyone’s standards, but I stuck with my gameplan from start to finish (thrusters in 5-4) and had some pleasant surprises (double-unders in big chunks of 15+, all the way through), and considering that long workouts are my downfall, I paced myself early and my last round wasn’t much slower than my first. In fact, my judge pointed out that my first five rounds or so were all consistently about 1:30 Min long, and for me to hold ANY kind of pace consistently for 8+ minutes is a great thing. I wasn’t even the last guy to finish in the class. So I’m happy. This sucked, I kept my head on straight, gutted it out, and didn’t totally blow a gasket. First open in the books! I may write up some reflection soon, but I’m really glad I did this. It focused my training, challenged me, and illuminated some weaknesses. I didn’t love how it beat up on my body, and I’m excited to return to some more intelligent training that listens more to what I need and doesn’t push me into performing sloppy reps in service of a score that doesn’t matter. But this was a blast, and I’m proud of what I did.
