⌯⌲ pspspsps i like that you call on me like i’m a cat, it makes me laugh. mini fics are always open but i seem to be running behind on them at the moment, so i hope you can forgive me if it takes me a while to answer. hmm, i think i get where you’re coming from — how about a younger, gn!reader that meets 19!dazai after oda’s death. i made this a little long on accident. oopsie~
Dazai leans against the railing near the river, cigarette dangling from his mouth, hands in his pockets, and bags with dark circles weighing under his eyes. He hasn’t slept in a few days, nightmares infiltrating his subconscious, forcing himself to stay awake no matter how badly he wants to try getting some shut eye. He sighs heavily, head slowly leaning back to stare at the sky through tired slits, sun setting, the evening on the horizon, and he doesn’t know what to do.
“Hey, can I bum one off of ya?” A voice startles him, standing up straighter to turn toward where it came from, looking down to see you standing there with a lighter. You stare at him, disinterested, kind of blank, and he blinks.
“What?”
“A cigarette. You got a second one?” You ask, pointing to the one in his mouth. He stares at you for a long moment, arms coming up to fold over his chest, then quirks a brow.
“How old are you?”
“Not sure what that has to do with anything,” you shrug, holding up your lighter. “I got a light. I need a stick. Do you have one or not so I can stop buggin’ ya?” Guess you have a point. He sighs inwardly, sticking his hand back in his jeans pocket then pulling out a bit of a crumpled carton, opening it to offer you. “Thanks.” You carefully pull one out then set it between your lips, beginning to light it, then stuff your lighter in your own pocket. You toss him a two-finger salute, then turn to go.
“That’s it?” He calls out to you, holding his cigarette between his fingers now, flicking off the ashes. You stop briefly to peer over your shoulder at him, eyebrows raising.
“Is there anything else?”
“Well, kid like you shouldn’t be runnin’ around asking strangers for cigarettes. Won’t your parents be worried?” You think to yourself, finger coming up to your chin, then shrug.
“Yeah, probably. But it is what it is,” with that, you toss him another wave, another ‘thanks again, stranger’, then went about your day. Dazai found that entire interaction odd, but he doesn’t really dwell much on it as he finishes his cigarette, tosses it on the ground, then sets off in the opposite direction.
Some time passes, a week or so at most, Dazai not remembering you in the slightest as he sits at the bar around the ramen chef, chin propped on his palm, fighting sleep. He's nodded off a couple times already, being jerked awake by the sound of other people, pots and pans hitting together, shouting, and people not paying attention nudging into him when they get up to leave. He sighs to himself, the fresh bowl floating down before him, and it smells delicious. He doesn't remember the last time he ate sustainable food.
You climb up on the seat beside his, recognizing the random bandages from the moment you walked through the door, and lightly tap his elbow. "How much is that?" You ask, pointing to his bowl of ramen, and he slow blinks, neck gradually craning to look in your direction, and he stares at you as if he is trying to solve an age-old puzzle. Your head cocks, waiting for an answer, the expressionless features etched into your face similar to one he had seen before - someone from a different lifetime ago.
"Didn't pay attention," he mutters, hand coming down to mess with the spoon as he watches steam swirl up from the broth. "Need a meal?"
"Yeah, but I got money," you explain, eyeing it once more. "Just looks good. I usually get the curry one, and it's always eight hundred yen. I can't spend more than that, but I wanna try somethin' new." He glances at you sidelong then back down into his bowl, carefully nudging it toward you.
"Give it a try before making decisions," he looks head, and you can't help staring at him, sizing him up, noting how scrawny he is, and how tired he looks.
"Nah, I don't wanna eat your food," you carefully scoot it back to him, straightening your back and place an order for your usual curry flavor you already know you adore. He watches you, sitting there politely but distant, and he sizes you up that time.
"How old are you, kid?" He asks the same question as before, finally getting himself a pair of chopsticks to spin the noodles around in the soup, watching everything float around amongst themselves.
"Not really important," you shrug, foot dangling. "Unless you wanna tell me how old you are. You look like you're my age, just kinda tall." He hums, a ghost of a smile pulling at his lips, and he lighty shakes his head.
"I'm old enough to buy my own cigarettes," he jokes, taking a small jab at you, and you offer him a lopsided smile.
"Fair enough. I'm young enough to still receive an allowance and use it to get ramen without telling my mom," you give him just enough context for how old you are without entirely giving it away, and he nods once while thinking to himself.
"Shouldn't keep secrets from your mom. Surely, she worries about you," he wants to eat, but it's been a heavy handful of days that have gone by without him eating, and his stomach hurts - too much for him to try putting anything in it to satiate the hunger. He's been stirring everything, and you notice when your bowl is set in front of you.
"I only make her worry the reasonable amount," you tap his arm again, and he spares you an exhausted glance. "Wanna try mine?" His eyes dart between the steaming bowl then your face, the aroma of its heavenly spices permeating his senses, and he can determine from the smell alone it's spicy. He hesitates, remembering one of the last times he ate curry, it was too unbearable on his tongue, and his friend simply laughed at him.
"Sure," his spoon withdraws, holding it up, and you slide the contents toward him. You wait patiently, watching him closely as his hand falters, stopping briefly - then in one fell swoop, he scoops some up to bring to his mouth. I was right, this is hot. He clears his throat when he swallows, tongue stinging with the burn of curry, and it somehow cured his prevention of eating his own. You stifle your laughter, sucking in your lips, pleased to see him beginning to eat his own food.
"Don't like spicy stuff?"
"Not really," he chuckles to himself, his stomach finding relief in enjoying a meal, and his chest stops twisting in a knot from loneliness with enjoying some company alongside it.
Weeks go by, the two of you gravitating toward another, you somehow always knowing where Dazai is, and him able to keep you from doing anything stupid. He helped you stop smoking, telling you tall tales about how your lungs will shrivel up and turn to ash if you kept it up - adding on that being so young makes it easier to do so, versus him, since he was older, he had more time to let them deteriorate. You helped him eat more, even if it wasn't all necessarily healthy stuff, he was putting food into his stomach more often.
He seemed to have money, no matter what, especially since you had gathered he didn't have a consistent job. He never hesitated to buy you things, small stuff like snacks, treats, drinks, and the occasional thing you needed for school. You'd promise to pay him back, but he would merely say: "Don't worry about it. You're a kid, you don't need to undergo the wonders of money problems yet."
You told him that you get along well with your parents, you just enjoyed wandering around town before dinnertime, except for your ramen days where you eat too much for lunch, afraid to take any home and get in trouble for "spoiling your dinner", so you have to pretend you're not feeling well. He couldn't help a small laugh, sprawled out on the bench with you, and he offered more inspiring words: "When you grow up, your stomach will grow with you, and you'll be able to handle a whole bowl of ramen and regular dinner." That comment did open the floor for you to poke his side, causing it to jerk away, and he shot you a look.
"Your stomach didn't seem to grow," you pointed out. "If anything, it looks like it shrank." He sighed, shaking his head, fingers tapping on the backrest as he looked off elsewhere.
"I'm just built different."
Dazai started looking forward to seeing you, his "little buddy", hanging out with you at the arcade, roaming around the stationary store for your school supplies, running amok in the convenience store to help yourself to snacks and sweets - but he still reminded you to get water to avoid getting a stomachache.
You talk about him often to your parents, them looking at you mildly bemused since they hadn't any clue you had been running around with a stranger, let alone someone much older than you, that they have never seen before. You suggested letting them meet him, and they were skeptical, but your dad folded well enough, convincing your mom it might be a good thing to meet this friend you have spending all of your time with.
"You want me to what?" Dazai stares at you, bewildered, when you told him you were going to take him home to meet your parents.
"Yeah, they said they wanna meet you," you shrug. "I talk about you all the time." He blinks, baffled that you speak about him, in what he can only assume is high praises, not used to that kind of positive attention - mostly because when you aren't around, he's scurrying through town like an unwanted alley rat that people are having to shoo off. "Plus, Mom's makin' dinner. Told her nothin' spicy since you don't like it." You stand to your feet, stretching your limbs and back, then gesture him to do the same.
"Look, kid, I dunno if this is a good idea."
"Worst thing that happens is they never let you back in again," you tell him, nonchalant, too casual, and begin leading the way toward your home. He doesn't know if he should follow you, feet firmly planted to the ground, hands stuffed in his pockets, and he watches your figure get smaller. You can tell his heavy scuffling isn't beside you, making you stop to look at him over your shoulder, and raise your brows. "Well? C'mon, Mom doesn't like people late for dinner, and she wants to meet my big brother." You hold your hand out to him, and he gawks, not knowing in the slightest what to do, to think, to say, and his mouth stays shut in a line. He swallows, you standing there patiently, and his feet shuffle forward.
"Yeah, alright," he whispers, catching up to your side, throwing his arm around your shoulders to bring closer into him. "You're kinda stubborn. You remind me of a friend I had."
"You mentioned. That Oda guy?" He hums in response. "Yeah, kinda weird we have the same last name." You mention offhandedly, and his steps slow, his features dropping down to stone. "Maybe it's more common than I thought."
"Your... Your family name's Oda?" He breathes, coming to a stop, his arm slipping from your shoulder, and you keep on walking - used to his weird behaviors by name.
"Sure is. Never thought it was a good time to mention it, especially after telling me about your friend," you turn to look at him, seeing he's as white as a ghost, looking as if he saw one too, and you sigh inwardly before granting him a soft smile. "I'm an only kid, Dazai. It's just a coincidence." He shifts in his spot, the two of you in the middle of the street, and he can't help asking the same question.
"How old are you, kid?" Your impression drops to puzzlement, tilting your head, then shrug. I've kept it from him long enough.
"Fifteen."
dazai doesn't believe in coincidences. i re-read it a couple times and realized you meant maybe being oda's sibling, but i had already started so i compromised with this lol.
