This is more from the Blanche collection, our favorite linen enthusiast who scouted vintage and antique embroidery pieces in Philadelphia and New York City throughout her 20th century life. 🧵 There is no doubt that Blanche knew a pretty linen when she saw one (or two in this case!). These two fingertip towels were made sometime between 1920-1940 and feature an unusually zippy arrangement of threadwork lines and designs plus florals in the shades of yellow, blue, lavender and sage. Fingertip towels were always used for lighter work like glass drying, hand drying or display and therefore differ from a hand towel which was used for much more active, everyday activities like wiping down counters, cleaning up messes and assisting in a general all-around helpful way in the kitchen. As a talented sewer herself, Blanche was always on the lookout for unique details when it came to design. In French, they call that “la patte” meaning the artist’s touch, their personal style, their paw. I love that! It’s what makes every piece of vintage embroidery 100% unique. And the appreciation of that is what made Blanche such a good finder of almost-antique pieces like these.
