dean winchester has known far too many kinds of love for his own good.
he’s known the kind of love that lasts a few weeks, and is all about the touches, the kisses and the nights spent under the covers. it’s the shortest and the most intense kind of love, which is probably why it burns out so fast. it’s still love, though, isn’t it? when it was over, his soul didn’t cry, but his body did. his heart missed the warmth of another body curled up against him, his fingers itching for a hand to hold for months after.
he’s known the kind of love he wished his father had given him when he was a kid. he’s seen a smiling face look upto him in a way he never thought he’d be lucky enough to see. he’s seen an unsteady pair of shoulders grow into strong hands as they cared for their mother. he’s seen those eyes look at him as if he was just another stranger.
he’s known the kind of love that wrapped him in layers of soft smiles and sweet suburban summertime. when he would wake up first and look at her sleeping face for the longest time. when it came to an end, it chipped away another piece of his heart, burning it down with the words: “i’m sorry, have we met before?” “...no. no, we haven’t.”
he’s known the kind of love a child will always have for his favorite uncle- a extraordinary amount of respect, masking a candid kind of affection. a bond only ever severed by death, never broken.
he’s known the kind of love that, unknowingly, calls out to him from the farthest ends of the universe. a love that spells redemption; a love with edges as calloused as his palms and eyes as shattered as his. a heart as broken as his, but he’s being ripped apart yet again. he knows he’ll come back, because he sees a light that’ll never dim, not for him.
then there’s the kind of love, beyond all forces of the universe. pure to a fault, a love that he has died for countless times, and will a thousand times over if he has to. death can’t touch it, but heartbreak can- heavy pieces of his heart piercing his ribs as he calls for his love to come back, to come back.
