Monster week! My body is holding up well... but I can't say the same about my mental game. On Friday I drank a boatload of water, had a pasta dinner, avoided dairy and went to bed early with the intention to OWN my 20 miler on Saturday morning.
For our pasta dinner, I tried out this new recipe. Delish. Seriously. I impressed myself. And my husband. With this pasta. FTW!
The recipe was easy to make and it's a great substitute for traditional marinara sauce. Most importantly, it didn't bother my sensitive tummy for my 20 mile long run.
While I was on a cooking streak, I made corn dog muffins for a Saturday BBQ. These bummed me out. The cornbread was totally dry, next time if I make them I'll add a liberal amount of honey to soften and sweeten them up!
So.... my long run. Mile 0-10 I felt solid. My legs were fluid, my stomach was cooperating, the wind was at my back (dumb decision in hindsight), the weather was humid but mild 77 degrees and overcast. I made my turnaround at mile 10 since I was running an out and back and by mile 12 my legs were feeling tired. I was bored and couldn't get my audio book to play, mentally I was fading fast. I took a TON of walking breaks and water fountain stops, but made it the full 20 miles. Check out my splits- you can see where it all started to roll downhill! I've tried to analyze why I struggled so I can avoid it in two weeks when I CRUSH (trying to work on my mental game, he he) my second 20 mile long run. It was a high mileage week and my legs were fatigued. Strength training has fallen off the radar, is that making a difference? Only one yoga session rather than two? Hmmm.
The entire week of training in review...Chicago Marathon Week 10 recap:Monday: Long run that I had blown off over the weekend... got it done. Felt awesome, the pace was quick and didn't seem challenging. Maybe my legs felt fresh after those few days off! 12 miles, 9:30 paceTuesday: Recovery run, 3.6 miles at 9:52 paceWednesday: restThursday: Regular run, 9 miles, 9:49 pace. I planned to do speedwork on this run but after 3 fast miles I recognized packing so much mileage into this week; it was better to skip a week of speed and instead focus on distance.Friday: Hot power yoga, 1 hourSaturday: 20 mile run, sorry bout that little rant above. Pace: 10:05.
This weekend is Ironman Wisconsin!!!! It's hard to believe BC was racing Iroman Mont Tremblant only two weeks ago and now he is closing out his racing season this weekend. I can't wait to cheer him on, I think he is going to have an awesome race. Go BC go!
