Someone (in my opinion) is ignorant when they cannot sympathize or empathize with the struggles of others. For me, ignorance has to do with people having a lack of knowledge on social issues. A lot of people who are ignorant fail to realize they have certain privileges, and when they fail to recognize their privilege or the advantages they have in society due to their privilege, I find that they are ignorant.
Okay everybody! I got some wonderful feedback about doing a positivity-based challenge this month, so here we go! Each week we’ll have a focus, this week we’re keeping it pretty straightforward! Feel free to go along with the daily prompts, or just follow along with the weekly focus, or just do your own thing. Just use the tag #PerfectlyPositiveJune to share how much or little you want to share throughout the month!
Next week we’ll be specifically focusing on recognizing positivity, and throughout the week the focus will involve writing down one or more positive things from your day. One of my personal goals is to identify and share one positive thing from my day every day this month; even if it’s just silver linings or cute things my pets did that made me smile! I’d love to see others participate in that as well, so I’m inviting you now!
Week 1: The Basics
Monday, June 1 - Day 1: Nice to meet you! Share a little bit about yourself so we can get to know each other!
Tuesday, June 2 - Day 2: What are your goals for this month? Where in your life are you hoping to improve your positivity over the next 30 days? If you’re working other goals in with positivity, set some focus areas to check in with each week.
Wednesday, June 3 - Day 3: How do you plan on accomplishing the goals you talked about yesterday both specific to this challenge and outside? Do you have any tips or tricks you can share with the rest of us?
Thursday, June 4 - Day 4: What are the challenges you face in your everyday life? Where do you struggle staying positive? What do you foresee being potential issues for you this month?
Friday, June 5 - Day 5: What are your strengths? In what areas of your life do you think you set a good example of positivity? (Try to reach out and offer support to each other if you see anyone who listed your strengths as things they struggle with yesterday!)
Saturday, June 6 - Day 6: Talk about 3 positive accomplishments that you’re proud of, either recently or overall! Really rock that self-love vibe!
Sunday, June 7 - Day 7: Weekly check in! How’ve you been doing? Have you had any struggles (expected or unexpected) so far? What can you learn from them?
The start of week 3 means we might be slipping on our goals. This may also mean that we are well on our way to really building the habits needed to reach these goals!
Where do you stand on your individual goal(s) at the start of week 3?
PERFECT timing! <3 I am actually falling a little behind, but I’m working my hardest to get back on track. It feels like whenever I start to get on top of one or two of my goals, the rest falter. Lately I’ve been really pushing myself to focus on my academic goals and my fitness goals, but my dietary/health and chore goals have been suffering.
Sooooooo, I’m trying something new to help me keep better focus on all of my goals throughout the day. I usually come home at the end of the day and revisit my goals with my Numbers checklist, which doesn’t translate to my phone very well. So, I got a checklist app and put in all of my goals on it so I can be checking in regularly throughout the day. Hopefully it’ll help! :D
What have you learned about yourself over the past 13 weeks? Are there any new habits you hope to keep or now know you need to build?
I’ve learned so much about myself over the past 13 weeks. I’ve learned a lot about how strong I am and the things I’m capable of. I’ve learned what obstacles I need to be seriously aware of and prepared for. I’ve learned a lot of awesome techniques for tracking my progress and keeping myself motivated every day! I’ve learned new recipes that I like, I’ve learned how to balance the focus on my school with the focus on my health.
I hope to keep tracking my progress, practicing my daily yoga, working on my training, eating vegan, keeping up with my accountability buddies, and balancing my life and priorities. I need to build better habits on a day to day basis as far as regularity goes. I’m getting much better at getting in all of the things I need to tackle each day, but I’m still not great about maintaining a regular schedule for things like eating, sleeping, and working out.
Day 48, Feb 17 - When you are on vacation, do you usually “treat ‘yo self” or try to eat healthy?
Usually I treat myself! But the last time I vacationed I decided to scale it back a little bit, and it actually felt really great to be doing all of my vacation stuff without being weighed down by heavy or rich food.
Day 49, Feb 18 - How do you deal with snacking (both eating and drinking) while on a road trip? Any tips to help drivers stay awake?
Generally I deal with snacking by planning ahead. I bring stuff like pre-chopped celery and peanut butter, cucumber slices, hummus and pita chips, or home-made trail mix. As far as staying awake, cold water is awesome, and I’m also a big fan of iced coffee!
Day 50, Feb 19 - Do you exercise while on vacation? What tips do you have for staying active?
I usually just try to walk around a lot on vacation and swim and let having fun be my exercise. I often mean to, but at the end of adventuring I’m so exhausted that I usually just tuck in and relax.
Day 51, Feb 20 - Tell us about either a fitness/travel win or a fitness travel loss and what you learned from it.
A huge fitness travel win for me was February of last year when I completed my second half marathon and first challenge! I learned a lot about recovery and traveling for fitness. My recovery time from that race was incredible compared to the Tinkerbell Half a month earlier.
Day 52, Feb 21 - Share any tips you have learned to help overcome specific travel challenges like long flights, train rides and car rides.
I can get very scared on flights, so one thing I always try to do is sleep for as much of the time as I can. I either slump on the tray table or the window if I’m in a window seat. I also make a habit of stretching my legs and arms and neck when I’ve been stationary for a while to help increase circulation and keep from getting too stiff. I’m also a huge fan of books on tape, especially my favorite book, Good Omens.
Day 53, Feb 22 - Imagine a perfect fitness vacation where you could have fun and actually get fitter- what does it look like to you?
I would love to take a trip where I could go hiking, rock climbing, relax in a spa, and get in a picturesque run or bike ride. I’m not particularly outdoorsy, but I think I’d love to go on a vacation where I could sightsee, take in nature, and see animals. Some other things I’d love to try are things like kayaking, paddle boarding, beach yoga, paddle boating, skiing, snowboarding, zip-lining, etc... I’m going to need to get braver and more adventurous if I’m ever going to try any of these.
Day 43 - How much sleep do you need to be effective? How do you feel the next day when you don’t get enough sleep?
The perfect amount for me is between 9 and 10 hours every night. When I don’t get enough sleep I feel cranky and groggy and get this terrible burning sensation in my stomach.
Day 44 - Do you ever nap to make up for lost sleep?
All the time! I tend to oversleep when I nap though, so that’s something I really need to work on if I want to keep napping. Otherwise I’m going to need to stop. :(
Day 45, Feb 14th - How easy is it for you to fall asleep? Do you have any issues staying asleep?
Usually falling asleep and staying asleep are pretty easy for me. The night before big events like races and tests and stuff it can be difficult to fall asleep. Otherwise it takes me about 5-10 minutes to fall asleep and then I sleep like a rock. If anything, I struggle with waking up, haha!
Day 46, Feb 15th - Give your best tips for getting more/better quality sleep. Also reflect on any lessons learned this week.
If you’re having trouble getting to sleep, something that worked for me was to try to find a good winding-down ritual to practice getting into every night. For me it’s washing my face, brushing my teeth, moisturizing, brushing my hair, putting on chapstick, etc..., putting my dogs to bed in their crates, stretching in bed, and then counting backward from my starting weight to my goal weight. I also like to visualize myself shrinking as I count down, to imagine what it’ll feel like when I’m not so heavy again.
Alright! So as we’re winding down with #FMLS90 it’s time to look to the future! (Side note: I cannot believe how much time is flying this year! Before I know it it’ll be time for my first marathon!!!) so… Without any further ado, here is my application (of sorts) to be one of John’s (fatmaninalittlesuit) Weight Loss Warriors!
Eligibility Requirements -
Need to lose at least 25 lbs to reach a healthy weight: I’m looking to lose a total of about 140 pounds or so to get down to around 130-140 pounds. For this year my goal is to lose another 70-80 pounds and get down under 200!
Be willing to be completely transparent within the team. This includes sharing weight, measurements, struggles, successes etc. Modest/fully clothed progress pictures are also required: Not even remotely a problem, already doing that on my blog as it is! :)
Be willing to keep all sensitive items shared within the team completely private: This is definitely not a problem. I understand that not everyone is comfortable expressing everything on a public forum (I know I’ve got my boundaries!) and would never want to betray someone’s trust in me like that.
Be willing to communicate via KIK and tumblr: I have both! I’m not super used to KIK, but I’d be more than happy to learn!
Be willing to provide brief weekly and detailed monthly reports: Already do! They’re super helpful, and I’m currently planning on continuing them from #FMLS90! :)
Want to help and be helped in equal proportions: I think this is actually a perfect description of my approach to blogging here in the community!!!
Be respectful to other’s approaches. There are many paths to fitness: This is actually one of my favorite things about fitness, health, and weight loss. Everyone has their own journey to take and I’m just here to help with what I can and cheer from the sidelines when I can’t.
Be willing to commit to the team for the balance of 2015: You’ve got it, dude! I’m in!
Optional But Helpful :
Have completed FMLS90 2014 or 2015: So, I definitely participated in this year’s #FMLS90, but I missed some pieces while I got the swing of being back in school. (It’d been almost 4 years! Yikes!) During this time I learned a lot about how to re-evaluate my lifestyle and demands to prevent important things like my health, weight loss, and fitness from falling through the cracks. Everyone has obstacles and challenges, and I think the first 3 months of this year have really helped me grow and develop a stronger set of skills regarding time management and goal-setting. I really dove back in this week and am working to catch up and finish strong!
Shown the ability to lose/maintain weight loss in the past: Both have been true for me multiple times. A lot of the weight I’m dealing with now is fairly recent (within the last 3 years or so) and before that I got very good at checking myself and keeping myself in a healthy range as much as possible.
Have acted as an accountability partner in the past: For this year’s #FMLS90 I had 4 accountability buddies!
I think I'd be a great candidate because of the following:
I'm super outgoing and love getting to know people!
I'm all about helping others with their struggles, and cheering them on in their victories! (Which I hope is evident in the way I blog on here!!!)
I have a lot of experience with many different types of weight loss programs and am always interested in learning more!
I've struggled in the past and been successful in the past, and like to think I have a pretty good idea of what's worked or not worked for me each time!
I'm a very honest person and I don't make excuses. I strongly believe in taking responsibility for my actions and my choices as well as their consequences.
I’ve learned the benefit of admitting when I’m struggling, and I’m genuinely working on being better at reaching out for help when I need it. I think this group would be a great environment for me to improve those abilities.
I'm on Tumblr and my phone a lot - so I'll be that much more accessible to anyone who needs/wants to talk!
I believe in dreaming big and making big goals with smaller progress goals to get myself there.
I’m always eager and willing to learn more about all of the different options and possibilities there are available to us to help lose weight and get healthier! I recognize that I don’t know everything and I love learning from other people when I can.
I prioritize balance in life. I think having goals and priorities are extremely important; but I also want (myself and everyone) to keep the big picture in mind and recognize that there are a lot of important pieces to being successful, healthy, and happy, and that we shouldn't sacrifice any one on account of another.
I genuinely believe in compassion and leading by example. While I aspire to help as many people as I can through encouragement, support, and checking in; I'm going to do everything in my power to be a strong and successful team member and to set a good standard to draw from!
I’ve absolutely loved being a part of #FMLS90! I’ve made some great friendships and learned some awesome things about myself and some wonderful things from other people. I’ve been really searching for something that I can do to continue progressing toward my goals this year, and I think this is such a fantastic idea you have. I’d be honored to participate and hope you’ll consider me to be a part of your group! <3
