2019 state and local elections tomorrow

I’m not going to contribute to the information overload we’re all dealing with as citizens, and I’m going to assume you've heard the whole spiel about why local politics are so important. And they are! But this year, local elections are really important to national politics for a couple of reasons.

State and local officials are in charge of elections. This is our chance to get good people into place for the 2020 election. If you want to have your vote counted, you need to vote for Democrats. If you don’t mind having your vote suppressed or worse, then you can leave things up to the Republicans.

Washington politicians are paying attention. If Democrats do well even in this off-year election, then it will encourage congressional Democrats to stay the course in their impeachment inquiry. More importantly, it will make at least some Republicans second-guess their strategy of protecting the Dear Leader at all costs, and might even get Senate Republicans to think more seriously about cutting him loose.

So get to your polling place tomorrow and vote for every Democrat on your ballot.

Sometimes there’s a backdoor pressure to overthink elections. “Both sides are too extreme, but also, both parties are the same, so I vote the person, not the party” .... apparently makes silly people feel sophisticated? But it’s generally pretty bad advice, and it’s especially wrong now. There will be one person and two options on your ballot tomorrow. That person is Donald Trump, and those options are: he’s fine (Republican), and fuck that guy (Democrat). Are you really going to miss a chance to say “fuck that guy”? Of course not.

Hey everyone saying I shouldn’t vote NDP because there aren’t enough people voting for them to get it. I don’t care.

That’s right! You read that correctly. I! Do! Not! Care!

It wouldn’t matter if every single person I interacted with via online or irl said they were voting Liberal to keep the Conservatives out and I should too, I still wouldn’t fucking do it.

Why?

Because it’s my vote. It’s my choice. My vote matters, it makes a difference in the long run. Even with the stupid First Past the Post system in place my vote still helps, even a little. Who knows, maybe my vote could be the deciding factor. Probably not but it will still help the NDP get seats.

I am not putting my vote towards a party that I don’t agree with. It won’t make me happier, it won’t make me better off. It won’t benefit me, and I don’t think it’ll benefit anyone who isn’t straight, white, rich, able-bodied, male either.

‘But you’re just throwing your vote away!’ No I’m not. My vote counts. This is not a two party system. And not only that but the NDP does have a chance at winning. BC has minority government with NDP, and everyone I know here in Southern Ontario hates Doug Ford and his Conservatives, and hates Justin Trudeau and his Liberals. Including the Babyboomers who you love to paint as racist Conservative supporters, which is sometimes true but not of the people I know.

No one; not my parents, not my coworkers, not my friends, and certainly not you, a mere stranger has the right to tell me who I should vote for. You can tell me all about why you think it’d be best to vote Liberal, or literally anyone else, but ultimately it’s my choice.

I’m not going to let strangers on the internet tell me who I should and shouldn’t vote for, not when there’s a chance in hell that the NDP could get in, either as a minority government or as a majority. Not when if the Liberals get in the situation for Indigenous peoples won’t get any better, and the goals towards the Paris Accords won’t go through.

And neither should you. Don’t let others tell you what to do with your vote. You like the NDP? Vote for them! You like the Greens? Vote for them! It’s your vote, it’s your choice, no one has the right to tell you how to use your vote.

I don’t care about what others say. I’m not letting people dictate and bully me into voting for who they think I should vote for, and neither should you.

Native votes went missing in North Carolina

For voting-rights advocates in Indian Country, the NC-9 do-over vote is a dry run ahead of the 2020 election.

Some of you know there’s a 2018 election redo after the GOP ballot theft scandal for North Carolina District 9. Election Day is September 10th. There’s a very little known piece of information about this election concerning Native Americans.

The 40,000 voting-eligible Lumbee tribal members living in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District could swing the special election for the tightly contested U.S. House race pitting Republican Dan Bishop against Democrat Dan McCready.

Ahead of next Tuesday’s vote, tribal members have been knocking on doors to encourage their neighbors to get out to the polls. Working with the Native voting-rights group Four Directions, more than two dozen members of the Lumbee tribe have been hired to visit every home on the reservation, and to even drive people to the polls if necessary.
