Cantillon LHD, Lambic Haute Densité or a lambic coming from a high density wort, brewed to obtain a higher alcohol content of around 8-9%. A complex sipper with a light viscous mouthfeel. Sweetness is noticeable with some raisins and caramel accents but a fine, elegant acidity cuts right trough that sweetness. Alcohol isn't hidden and with the raisin, bready, nutty and fruity accents this reminds me of a Madeira wine. Sampling some excellent Cantillon lambic matured on Armagnac barrels. This will most likely end up as a variation on the 50n4e Cognac lambic. Fine nutty and spicy aroma with a slight musty, fungus like accent and a soft, sweet apple touch. Jester King's Spontan 3&4, appelation Méthode Gueuze. A blend of spontaneously fermented beers inspired by the classic geuze and oude gueuze made by the brewers and blenders from the Belgian Pajot region and Zenne valley. Been hearing great things about these so I'm curious to taste them. Jester King has been putting quite some effort in this beer and I like the fact that they're working on a proper name, a unique identity on this instead of naming it just geuze, lambic or lambic style. Identifying your own terroir and history is important in this type of beers which are rooted in a strong and long tradition. That way I feel 'Méthode Gueuze' is a good name but maybe 'Méthode Classic'(yeah, sparkling wine, I know 😉) or something similar would have been better cause now you're still tied to and refering strongly to gueuze, letting your own identity depend on that. Besides, except for Cantillon the name geuze isn't really a good reference here. Oh well, I feel Jester King is doing this in the most respectful way and I hope all the brewers and blenders will do this and that they won't abuse the name gueuze like it happened over here. An absolute delight, this Abominable by Fremont Brewing, a strong ale with cinnamon and coffee, aged on Bourbon barrels. The cinnamon was rather soft in the nose, present but not overpowering. Caramel, booze, vanilla, sugar.....and a rather strong impression of coconut strangely enough, even though it isn't used in the beer as an ingredient. It must be that concoction of aromas that made this rather unique exotic perfume. Coffee was well present in the aftertaste, not that much in the nose. Incredible tasty beer! Some literature and some beer, works fine together. Dig into a book while sipping on a good beer. Let the words sink through while you enjoy the complex taste and aroma of the beer. It's a bit of a contradiction but I'm having a Rueuze, @thebruery 's interpretation of a classic Belgian Gueuze while reading this brand new, rather big, book on Belgian beer. Preparing myself for a too chauvinistic approach I guess...😉 About 15pages in and I sense this will be a very enjoyable and complete book on Belgian beer. The design itself; concept, artwork and photography, justifies for a part the rather high price of this book. The Rueuze beer is good. Less sour than I expected. It is more accentuated on sourness than a real Gueuze but it's not a battery acid sourness like some other US sour beers. Fruity; apple, pineapple and stone fruits in aroma with a touch of sulphur and quite some oak. Bit low on the co2. Finish is dry.
