Looking back on the seminar...
I loved the idea that white privilege doesn’t mean white people didn’t work hard to earn what they have, they just happened to also be met by a system that supported them. Mainly bc that’s probably one of the only ways to phrase it to make most people happy
Reverse racism isn’t a thing, but prejudice is. I got into an argument with my dad about this. It was great. He is very convinced that reverse racism exists. I finally got him to agree that reverse racism would only be a thing if white people were not in a position of power. Except that’s not really the case in this country. So…
I think there’s a lot that I do without realizing it— avoiding eye contact with people, walking faster alone at night when there are black or Hispanic men walking behind you (though honestly, I would walk faster if there was a white man, too. I probably wouldn’t be as scared if it was an Asian man, though, which says a lot about my implicit racial biases). However, I do recognize that this is mostly a male/ female issue…
Being an ally means standing up when others can’t. Somehow.
