Bad Night - Good Night - C.H.
“So, what movie have you gotten planned?” I question as I pass Calum lounging on the sofa, waiting for me to join in on the festivities. Seeing as how I had to work on Halloween, we had postponed our annual horror-movie-night. His gaze flicks up to me and he grins deviously, patting the spot beside him. I respond with a shake of my head and disappear into the kitchen for snacks and drinks.
“The bye bye man. It’s new.” I hear his voice exclaim loudly from the other room and I grasp to bags of chips in my arms, as well as a bottle of coke before heading back out. “Isn’t that the supernatural one? Where the guy continuously repeats don’t say it, don’t think it, don’t say it, don’t think it? Just the thought of it gives me the absolute creeps.” I visibly shudder when I drop everything onto the coffee table, sliding onto the sofa beside Calum and covering my lower body with one of the plush blankets.
“I don’t think it’ll be that bad. Probably very predictable. Don’t worry Y/N, I’ll protect you from the scary man.” He mocks me, and I respond by slapping him across his biceps, the loud smack echoing through our otherwise empty living room. “Remind me again why I even let you pay half the rent of this shithole.”
“Because otherwise you would have to pay full rent of this shithole.” Calum laughs and presses play, leaning back again and throwing his arm around my shoulder.
“That wasn’t so bad, was it?” Calum grinned down at me and I manage to make a little grin appear on my lips, although I can’t admit to him that I am actually terrified. I can handle gore and severed limbs better than any jump scare or supernatural entities and I know sleep won’t be visiting me tonight.
“It – it was okay. I guess.” I shrug my shoulders as Calum leaves the sofa to clean up the mess we had made, my gaze locked on the intro image of the man, words scattered across the television. Don’t say it, don’t think it. Well I’m thinking of it right now.
“It seems as if only college kids get murdered by strange things in the middle of the night, preferably on Halloween.” I mumble, dropping the empty chips bag in the trash bin before turning to Cal. “Good thing it isn’t Halloween then, I’m sure we’ll survive the night.” He winks again, and I know he’s just toying with me or trying to lighten the mood, but all it does is scare me further.
“Okay, I’m off to bed. Later Y/N.” he pats my head as he passes me, his lean body already out of sight before I can whip my head around. The flat is eerily quiet, the only light in the living room coming from cars passing by the window. A small shriek leaves my lips and I run to my bed room, smacking the door closed behind me and leaning against it.
“Irrational fear of horror movies, just what you need Y/N.” I mumble to myself, crawling under the cover and switching off my bed light. Even though I lay completely still and try to focus on anything but my fear, I jump every time a car passes my window and the room is briefly illuminated. My mind plays tricks on me as I hear whispering in the distance and a loud clanging noise – although I’m sure that’s the water flowing through the pipes.
After a few minutes of me, petrified in bed, sweat dripping down my brow, I can’t take it anymore. I jump out of bed and scurry my way over to across the hall. My knuckles lightly tap against the wooden surface but I know Calum has heard me when I hear him shuffling on the other side of the door.
“Y/N? Are you alright?” He mumbles as the door clicks open, his hand coursing through his unruly hair. I shrug my shoulders, biting my lip, because I didn’t want to admit that the movie had scared me. “Can I – Can I sleep with you?”
Calum’s brows furrow at my question but when something seems to click in his head – which I am thankful for, I wouldn’t want to say it aloud – he steps aside and motions for me to enter. “Of course, babe.” I nod my head as a silent thank you and slowly thread past the threshold, hovering in front of Calum’s bed, ear perked up to hear his movements behind me.
“Well, get in. You can’t sleep standing up all night.” He chuckles as he passes me, slipping underneath the duvet and getting comfortable. He pats the spot beside him and I tentatively pull the covers back, trying to make myself as comfortable as well. There’s a good arm’s space between us, awkwardness filling the room as we glance at each other every so often.
I’m on my back, flinching every time light shines through Calum’s window as well. After a few minutes, a loud growl leaves his lips and he throws his arm up, resting on his hand as he turns towards me. “Did I pick the wrong movie?”
“Maybe…” I whisper, glancing towards him and granting him with an awkward grin. He chuckles lowly, dropping back onto his side and holding his arm out to me. “Don’t be awkward and come here. I’ll protect you from any supernatural things that would’ve killed you way before tonight if they really wanted to.” It drags humour filled laughter from my lips as I scoot closer, laying my head on Calum’s biceps, my hands fiddling with themselves between our chests.
“Thank you Cal.” I mumble, smiling up at him, watching his reciprocate the smile as he slowly blinks. He turns back onto his back, pulling me with him and a shriek leaves my lips when I’m suddenly draped across his chest, his arm curling around my body to rest his hand on my hip.
“Let’s go to sleep, Y/n. Good night.” His lips briefly, longingly, press against my temple and I feel my eyelids fluttering shut, completely at ease. “’Night.” I whisper when I feel the heavy block of sleep overtake me and I fall asleep in Calum’s arms, safe from any supernatural harm.
