“Probiotic”
one yummy fruit a day!!
Oh yikes, it’s green
From www.lookitcookit.tumblr.com
According to a new report 68% of Britons have not put anything green on their plate for over a week. 20% admit to not eating a green vegetable in a month or longer.
But it’s not just green vegetables that the Brits are shunning; the average adult only consumes 3 of the recommended 5-10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. In this survey of 1500 adults (conducted by Organic UK), some of the participants go for four days without eating a meal made mostly from fresh produce.
The colour on their plate is predominantly beige. 35% of us habitually load our plates with chips, pasta and potatoes, to the exclusion of fruits and vegetables. When it comes to flavour, many people don’t even know what artichoke, avocado, celeriac or okra taste like. However, they do know they can’t stand aubergines (10%) and loathe Brussels sprouts (15%).
Of course the organic businesses must be distressed by this news. But there are other factors to consider. Obesity in Britain is reaching worrying levels. The UK is (according to WHO figures) the third fattest country in Europe, with nearly 30% of adults being classed as obese, a rate only exceeded by Turkey and Malta.
--------------
The ‘green’ in the picture is a Galia melon, halved and scooped into balls. On top are slices of autumn plums and kiwi. I wonder how many people would choose a dessert like this when offered a helping of sticky toffee pudding or a chocolate brownie? If you’re having any doubts, please just go back and read the previous paragraph.
Peas
From www.lookitcookit.tumblr.com
Frozen peas must be the most sought after vegetable in the freezer cabinet. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like them. Other green ‘things’ (as those struggling with the 5-a-day might call them) like broccoli, sprouts, kale and spinach, come in for much criticism. But the humble pea is much adored.
One reason is that freezing does them no harm - in fact they are in some ways even better than so-called fresh. The reason is that they are picked, podded and frozen so quickly that they still have an excellent taste. Then there’s the question of size: they are all the same: either very small (called petits pois) or larger. The small ones have a sweeter taste.
So why should anyone go to the trouble of seeking out and podding fresh peas? For a start, it’s actually fun. From the pictures you can see that there is always a surprise. Some pods have fat peas, others tiny little ones. Then there is the taste. It is somehow different. The larger peas need a bit longer cooking as they can be a bit tough, but again, they have a flavour that is noticeably different.
If you’re looking for a relaxing way of spending half an hour, buy a large pile of fresh peas and get started. If, as for most of us, you are pressed for time, just continue to enjoy one of the miracles of modern farming and freezing.
By the way, the pictures show, from top left: sugar peas (sometimes called snow peas) which are eaten with the pod - quite different. Then there are the fresh ones and in the small container, the rather tiny amount yielded from a pile of fresh peas in the pod.
Gluten Free Banana Pancakes
Gluten Free Banana Pancakes - #Recipe #Glutenfree #Pancakes #Banana #Healthybreakfast
Wednesday morning and I decided to agree to making the boys banana pancakes. I was tired and just wanted an easy life, I didn’t think for a second what have I let myself on for. I quickly went off to search for a recipe and came across quite a few great recipes for banana pancakes. I looked at a few but chose the simplest. Anything for and easy life yesterday. Although mine were not 100% gluten…

More reasons to like plants
In attempts to improve the health of the nation, the UK government has for many years been trying to encourage its citizens to consume more plant products to benefit from their health-promoting properties. In March 2003, Britain’s last/most recent (! – 2 days to go??!! Ed. – Mr Cuttings, no political commentary, please!) Labour government introduced its ‘5-a-day’ campaign.* This noble campaign…
