Omigosh...I get to go full ARMY mode and analyze the hell out of this!
Okay, not fully. My brain’s running on fumes at this point from the week I’ve had, but I’m still really excited about how much is in this video. For those of you who are also ARMY, you’ll probably love this.
So as many of you have stated (because I’m late), this is definitely about society’s obsession with attention, in any form and in any way. Each of the guys represent the extremes many of us go to in order to achieve this: buying material things (including a “material” wife) to look like the “perfect family;” changing our appearance to meet the latest trend; doing dangerous stunts to post on social media; and of course the most extreme, faking our own death (or threatening to end our lives with no intention of doing so for sympathy clout).
I looked a little closer at each of their scenarios, and I wondered if they didn’t choose them on accident or coincidence. What if these are the guys’ actual fears for themselves, of what they hope they never turn into? I don’t know about you, but using Calum as an example, I would think that the whole “perfect family” persona shown in the video would drive someone like him nuts. It’s not because he doesn’t want a family, but he doesn’t want to be caught in what is pretty clearly a soulless situation.
In fact, none of them want to be in situations where they lose themselves.
Luke loses himself in this...completely. He literally dies. Michael supposedly survives what should have been a deadly car crash just to post about it; he lost himself and bounces back, just to probably go off and try to “lose himself” again. Ashton keeps agreeing to the woman’s attempts to look perfect, to the point that blood is spilled (or sprayed, actually), and him and the other doctor think nothing of it.
Finally, there’s the ending. We find out that none of them were really who we thought they were in the video, pulling their faces off to reveal completely different, older people underneath. This begs the question: do we really know them? Like, know them? Or do we just think we do?
Okay, I’m going to shut up now. After all, this is just my little ol’ theory. I’m sure I missed some things, but that is what really stood out to me the most.
