i have been randomly rewatching episodes of h50 and today the dice lead me to 8.25, and there’s a lot of stuff in that episode that i could ramble on about (the restaurant subplot was still alive! nahele makes an appearance! steve is watching an instructional video on how to boil water, fjdkfdj) but what unexpectedly jumped out at me was the bit just after steve first gets aboard the russian submarine that appeared at the hawaiian coastline out of nowhere, and he introduces himself as a guy who runs a “law enforcement task force on this island” and the russian commander says, “you’re not military?” and steve says “i was.”

that’s past tense! i have feelings about the fact that that’s past tense, because the navy has always been a huge part of steve’s identity (i’m pretty sure it was steve’s identity for a long time) and apparently, by this point, he feels comfortable talking about that as something that used to be true, but isn’t anymore. he has other things to base his life around now, like five-0, their little found ohana, and the very settled future he’s building with danny.
