A Pet, oil on canvas (1853) Walter Howell Deverell (1827–1854) features a young woman watching over a caged bird. When first exhibited at the Liverpool Academy, it was accompanied by a quote from W. J. Broderip, "But after all, it is very questionable kindness to make a pet of a creature so essentially volatile". This has led art historians to interpret the work as a commentary on the domestic confinement of women in the Victorian era.

While Deverell remained a close associate of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, A Pet marks a shift toward a broader naturalist and academic style. Deverell died young, yet his memory was cherished by friends. In 1895, Burne-Jones and his wife bought this painting partly “as a link with a time of which we had often thought”. Loc. Tate, London.
