January Writing Post 2

Where do you find inspiration for your stories?
I’ve been reading since I was young. My parents were both avid readers. They even bought a house once solely because it had floor to ceiling bookshelves in the living/dining room. :) Anyway, I wasn’t introduced to fantasy until high school where one of my English electives was Science Fiction & Fantasy. I had always read realistic books. That’s what my parents had around and that’s what they had me read in school. This class really opened my eyes to the potential for imagination that writing held.
Since then, I have read fantasy books somewhat regularly. Of course, there are also a few decent films. I definitely draw my inspiration from the genre, but I also have been inspired by other things I’ve read. In particular, the class I took last year on literary theory definitely helped prepare me to develop many of the ideas in the book I’m writing.
Your turn: If you are a writer, where do you find inspiration? If you are a reader, do you have a favorite genre?
Cross-posted on Post.
Me: I have never come up with an original idea in my entire life.
Book Agent Query Form: List books that are like your novel.
Me: ... I can't think of a single one. I'm a hack.
Hi, I was wondering, what is the status of your 'A dark night in Ba Sing Se', the City Guard! Zuko AU? Is it on temporary hiatus? VIP? I will get there after I finish this other thing? Abandoned forever?
All my stories are active, but I have a Literal Baby, so there's no way I can match last year's 300k word count. Y'all, can you believe I've now been a fanfic writer for one-and-one-half years? You are all amazing and welcoming and it feels like longer, but in the good found family and community way, not the bad hot car in a traffic jam way.
(I am on track to do 100k or more though, plus literally publishing Li's Friends, and I've so far made one Serious Face short story sale, which is fucking fabulous considering I'm literally typing over my baby during naptimes).
This year's story focus is listed on AO3 and on a post a few down from this one, so I won't repeat it here.
(In general don't send asks like this because no author likes being asked about updates, and my writing schedule is posted on AO3 in a link that appears at the end of all my stories. But I do answer one of these every few months just to remind people Not To Poke and you were polite enough to win that reply lottery.)
Honestly, what an A+ screenwriting technique to have Ed Kemper draw attention to how fucking short Manson is in the next scene and telling the audience not to stare, because literally in the next scene, you can’t do anything BUT.
top 5 [redacted]
5. [untranslated; believed to refer either to the concept of vastness between stars in a constellation or the sensation of being unable to adequately articulate one’s feelings of affection]
4. [noise is unidentified, most likely a prophecy as delivered by owls]
3. [ocean, not named. against all probability, cryptomariners have been unable to determine the actual location of this vast body of water, but suspect that it is deep, and beautiful, and home to a rich variety of life.]
2. [a dream jar, the label long since faded. contents have spoiled and gone iridescent, may cause hallucinations if consumed.
1. [probably a moth ?]
