After the hiccups stopped, he downed another cup. I could tell he was drunk. I asked him: “How are you so good at catching birds?” “You and I are the same; you could catch them too,” he said. “The same, how?” I asked. “Bad blood. We’ve got bad blood with the birds.” “How can humans have bad blood with birds?” I was astonished. At this point, he could barely keep his eyes open anymore. His head began to droop down. I shook him and said, “Hey, how can humans have bad blood with birds?” But he was fast asleep. I continued to shake him until he was forced to rouse. Slowly, he finally reopened his eyes, one at a time, like a newly-born chick that a hen just shat out. He muttered, “What did you say?” “How can people have bad blood with birds?” “Because – because the bird saw me. It saw me.” He stretched out his fingers, loosened up his arm, and rested his head back on it. “What did it see?” I asked. But he was fast asleep once more.

Praised by poet Bei Dao as one of “one of the most gifted Chinese writers in recent times”, Chinese writer A Yi (real name Ai Guozhu) is a rising figure in the global literary scene. Born in Jiangxi Province in 1976, A Yi has worked as a police officer, secretary, and magazine editor prior to entering the literary world. He is known for his stubborn personality and dark, unflinching writing style. Many of the themes in his stories are drawn from his experiences working as a police officer, and explore subjects like crime, murder, and the rural poor.

“The Bird Saw Me” appears in A Yi’s 2010 short story collection of the same name. A Yi utilizes multiple perspectives, narrative gaps, and temporal distortion to create a story that forces the reader to put the pieces together themselves.

As of right now, only one of A Yi’s novels have received an English translation.
