Avenger Endgame spoiler below the cut
so, I came across this gif:
WAIT what if it is far from home not bc he is in europe but because Tony was his home AND NOW HE IS FAR FROM HIM bc he is in the farm happy
can we talk about Gwynth Paltrow’s acting for a second???
in that scene you see such strong emotion conveyed from her
even if you haven’t seen any of the previous movies you can tell how deeply she cares for Tony and how much his death wrecks her
she has to be there for tony, to comfort his as he’s dying, to hold face and not break down
and when his light does go out, she’s shattered
it’s such an emotional scene and while I’m on board for rdj getting an Oscar for that scene, Gwynth Paltrow’s acting is so moving
Picture this. Instead of Tony snapping his fingers and losing everything he's spent the last ten years building, and instead of Cap's character being entirely assassinated -- Cap gets the gauntlet.
It get a passed to him and there's just this heartbeat of a moment where he looks out over the battlefield and sees that there's no other option. Both the largetime travel portal and the one in the van are destroyed, and Steve's standing there with a full gauntlet looking out over a field of destruction as the army pulverizes earth's forces. Earth's defenders are putting up a good fight, absolutely, but even with the return of everyone who was dusted, the Wakandan army still isn't at full strength -- they still don't have back the soldiers who fell on the field during the battle five years ago, but Thanos' army plucked straight from 2014 is fresh and full and immense, and earth is losing.
They're losing slowly, but they are losing; slowly crumbling under the sheer might of Thanos' army.
There's no other choice.
Steve puts on the gauntlet. Pain rips up his arm and into his body and it feels like it should be enough to tear him apart, but somehow he manages to keep his feet.
A short distanve away, Thanos sees that Steve is wearing the gauntlet, and he hollers in rage and barrels through the field in an attempt to get to Steve in time to stop him. Bucky sees, knows in an instwnt what Steve's plan is, and knows instinctively that it won't end well for Steve so he screams out a denial and starts trying to fight his way over to his best friend's side. Tony sees what's happening and he intercepts Thanos - holds him off for just long enough that Steve can raise his gauntleted hand.... and snap.
The battlefield goes suddenly quiet. Thanos looks at his hand, watches it turn to dust. His whole army, gone in moments.
But Steve is a crumpled form on the ground. Bucky is the first one to make it to him. The gauntlet still has all six gems on it, but it's burnt up and sparking, and Steve's whole side is burnt black too, and his eyes are open but his gaze is distant and hardly focussed.
Bucky hefts him up, gets him half-sitting sideways against Buck's chest, and Bucky talks to him desperately for a moment - "you did it Steve" and "were gonna get you some help ok pal" and "we're not at the end of the line yet, don't think you're off the hook," and Steve's gaze slides slowly and settles on Buck's face, but there's nothing else in his expression - no ghost of a smile or a look of recognition. Just the thousand yard stare of someone who is nine-tenths of the way out the door already.
"Ok, it's ok," Bucky says, switching tactics, because he knows that no matter how much he begs, Steve isn't gonna be able to stay. "You... you can go to sleep, Steve, it's ok. You did it. You saved us. You can go to sleep."
And there's others there too, clustered around them -- Sam has tears streaming down his face and his hand is on Steve's uninjured shoulder, Tony is nearby, the spider kid beside him, bith of them watching solemnly. Clint's not far away either, grief drawing deep lines on his face; Rhodes and Thor and Bruce are standing close in silent vigil.
Bucky notices none of them; just keeps his eyes on Steve's and soothes him through these last moments. Steve's gaze doesn't falter from Buck's until the last moment, when he sighs softly and his head tips gently sideways against Bucky chest, and then he's still.
A sob tears itself from Bucky's throat then, and he curls up around his best friend and he cries.
But Steve -- Steve's not there any more to see the way Bucky and Sam grieve for him. To see how the Avemgers grieve for him. How the world does.
Steve blinks his eyes open to a world tinted a warm orange and a woman with a red dress and a warm smile and a chiding look in her eye.
"You're late," Peggy says, and Steve grins.
Look at this absolute savage.
