Starting 2018 with my new favorite high fantasy series and my new book counting buddy. Banewreaker and Godslayer by Jacqueline Carey. Breathtaking, heartbreaking, and thought provoking. A book about cruelty and war. A book about cost reckoned by choices and prejudice. A book about small kindnesses. I am sundered and thrilled after reading it.
It's been harder to make time to read with so much to do this fall, but read no.15 was worth every effort! Everything Leads to You was a stunning read. Tenderly told with prose that swings from subtle to astounding and so very earnest in all the right ways. Pure hearted fun. Lars can only stare at read no.14 in awe. #papergirls volume one is that rare gem that gives you high expectations and then tops them one after another. 80's! Teen girl friendships! Adventure! Aliens! Read no.18 is Every Heart a Doorway by @seananmcguire. What a way to finish the year! This book is dark, magical, and deep with heart. It is everything I loved about stories as a kid. It cuts down to the bone of what a story can do and what it can mean. It dances perfectly between the legacy of children walking through doorways and a space entirely of its own. With November over I can finally catch up on my wonderful reading list! No.16 for the year is Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore, and it might crack its way into being a new favorite?? I’ve been blessed with a lot of wonderful reads this year but none have been as structurally ambitious or seamlessly engaging as this one. I’ve seen a lot of commentaries say that this can be looked at as a series of alternate stories, but my two cents is that it /shouldn’t/. Cashore has created a mystery and a pace driven by gripping emotional beats and a deliberate disbursal of information that is astounding when taken whole. This is a touching novel of grief, love, and self-discovery. I recommend it to just about anyone. 5/5
A Queer History of the United States by Michael Bronski. Came for the tidbits about 19th century culture, stayed for the hope and inspiration this book delivers.
