First of all, CONGRATS ON THE BOOK!! WHAT!! AN!! ACCOMPLISHMENT!! Secondly, was wondering if you’d be willing to write any Ace Kara being hesitant to come out to Lena?? I’ll spare you the details, but that headcannon links closely to recent personal events CONGRATS AGAIN YOU HUMAN EMBODIMENT OF ACHIEVEMENT!!!
It terrifies her when Lena glances down at her mouth like that.
Because she wants to kiss her -- Rao, she wants to kiss her -- but she doesn’t want to do much more than that.
And she doesn’t even want to kiss her, not all the time, in the same ways that everyone else seems to want to.
She wants to be with her, she knows that. And, she thinks, looking over Lena’s body, watching her when she walks, she wouldn’t mind even having sex with her sometimes.
But again. Not in the same ways other people seem to want to have sex all the time.
In Kara’s mind, there would be more cuddling and making out, more mutual masturbation; and there would be passion, Rao, there would, but it wouldn’t be...
The ways everyone else talks about it just doesn’t fit.
And she knows why. She’s had long chats about it with Alex, who feels much the same way. And it can totally work: Alex is ace, and Alex is with Maggie, and Maggie loves her senseless.
So it can work, with Lena. It totally can work.
Except... except what if it can’t?
Alex promises her -- hell, even Maggie promises her -- that Maggie is a very, very sexual person, and still shares everything she needs and more with Alex, without Alex giving anything she doesn’t want to.
And they both promise it can be the same way with Lena.
But what if it can’t?
What if they’ve been doing this dance of cautionary fascination to risky ally to friend to best friend to... what is it now? Girlfriends? Lovers?
What if they’ve been doing this dance for so long, sharing so much platonic intimacy for so long, that progressing their relationship only means one thing to Lena: adding sex -- lots of sex -- into the equation?
What if that’s how Lena defines what she wants with Kara, and what if Kara can’t give that, or -- worse? -- what if Kara gives that even when she doesn’t want to because she loves Lena too much to give up without trying...
But she knows it’s not about trying, and she knows it’s not about fixing.
She knows it’s about being.
And she knows she wants to be with Lena.
And Lena -- according to Alex and Maggie and even J’onn, for Rao’s sake -- definitely wants to be with Kara.
So even though it terrifies her when Lena looks at her mouth like that, Kara has to admit that she’s been doing some looking of her own.
And she decides to do something about it.
So one of their quiet nights on Lena’s balcony together -- not date nights, no, just gal pals, just best friends, until one of them is brave enough to admit that they are, in fact, date nights -- Kara leans in.
She leans in and she takes off her glasses -- that’s a secret long past gone -- and she lets Lena watch her look at Lena’s lips.
“Can I kiss you?” Kara asks as Lena’s breath hitches, because Rao, does she want to. And she’s going to hope that Lena will read her body, will understand her body, her wants. And she’s going to hope that, if Lena doesn’t get it intuitively, she’ll be brave enough to pause, and to tell her, to show her.
“Please do,” Lena whispers, and Kara’s heart leaps, because Lena... Lena lets Kara lead. She kisses her soft and slow, hands slipping up to Kara’s face, to her hair.
She moves with desire, but without urgency; she moves like she wants Kara more than she’s ever wanted anything, but without going too much, too fast, too unwanted.
Kara surprises herself by slipping her tongue into Lena’s mouth, just a little bit, just for a quick moment, and the soft gasp from Lena makes Kara smile into her lips.
They pause with their foreheads resting against each other’s, National City’s lights flickering on the feather-light breeze around them.
“Lena, I want to do this more,” Kara dives.
“So do I,” Lena smiles with her eyes closed, her voice rich and so full that it turns Kara’s heart inside out in all the best ways. She pulls back slightly so she can watch Lena’s face as her eyes flutter open slowly.
Kara clears her throat slightly and Lena’s gaze sharpens attentively.
“But hey, um. That? Kissing you? That was... that was wow. Kissing you was wow. And I want to kiss you more. A lot more.”
She goes to adjust her glasses before remembering she took them off. They both chuckle, and Lena catches her hand before it falls and kisses each knuckle.
Kara bites her lip as she watches, as Lena watches her watch.
“But?” Lena asks, turning Kara’s hand over to press a kiss to her palm, the inside of her wrist.
“Not but, not really. And. And I want to kiss you more. And I want to date you. I want to be with you. And, I’m ace. Asexual. I want to date you, to be with you, and I’m ace.”
Her pulse quickened as a panic attack started coming on, unbidden and sudden and completely, utterly predictable.
Lena didn’t miss a beat before putting her hand on Kara’s chest. “Breathe into my hand, darling. Breathe out into my hand, just like that. Shhh, that’s right. Just like that, darling.”
A few long moments, a lot of long breaths. A long, long, long silence.
Eventually, Kara could speak again.
“I like you calling me darling.”
“Good,” Lena winked, and Kara gulped.
“Um. That’s it? Just... good?”
Lena tilted her head in a motion Kara swore she’d picked up from Maggie.
“Yes. What else would it be, Kara? Darling?” Her eyes sparkled, and Kara had to check to make sure she was still on the ground, because she thought for a moment that she was accidentally flying again.
“You’re... that’s not a... a problem? Or an obstacle? Or --”
Kara spluttered to a halt as Lena shook her head and shrugged her shoulders. “No, none of those things. Kara, you are not a problem, nor an obstacle. But you are, if you want to be, very much my girlfriend.”
If she were standing up, she’d trip over herself. As it was, she just fell into Lena’s eyes.
“Yeah. Yes. I want to be. Your girlfriend. If you want to be mine.”
“Oh, Kara,” Lena stroked her cheek with the backs of her fingers, “didn’t you know, darling? I’ve always been yours.”
