I sent a friend video of the head swirling around the pickle jar and me laughing as I struggled to film it face-on. He was like "That's really creepy, but kind of cool."
Finally gave headshrinking a shot! Truly, this is a glorious, arcane method that through some manner of witchcraft has achieved a well-proportioned head.
The life of a doll collector (this one at least) involves nudie cuties sitting on top of a box fan drying their boil washes. Mary Kate was found a month or so ago, and this Uneeda gal I’ve had for a couple of years. They’re both on Volks bodies from Mandarake (!!!!); Mary Kate for the petite proportions and Uneeda because I thought the booby and long-leggedness would help balance the proportions of her...unique...face. 😂She also just has a big ol’ head that is pink pink pink. Oh, and Mary Kate was my first acetone shrink! I used Dirili’s slow shrink method, and besides accidentally wiping off some of her lipstick, it went great! She’s still bobble-headed but that’s to be expected. I’m so happy these two are coming together!
I put a Fresh Dolls Lynette head in acetone/water to shrink up on Saturday. I kinda forgot about it tbh... I just went to pull it out and noticed the mixture was very... brown?
I forgot to pull her earrings out before dunking her. It became slimy earring soup.
Everything on the outside scrapped off okay. The inside of her head is a little ehhhhhh though.
So I acetone shrunk some hands. I think they are as small as they will get at this point. It started with shrinking some action figure hands, which are solid vinyl. In the first pic you can see how much they blew up before shrinking down to be slightly smaller than the unshrunk hands (the hands with the wrist connectors) The shrinking process wasn’t kind to these hands as they cracked and split. Probably from uneven acetone absorption. Another thing to note is that they lightened up in tone when compared to the originals...
I have a doll I thrifted soaking in Boreal Citrus Wonder to see if it will weaken the glue enough to pop the torso apart. Apparently I can't find the right Krud Kutter in Canada to try using that :/.
Also all the hands I've tried shrinking have shrunk, but I want to redunk them to see if they will go smaller. It seems like every time I look at them, they are smaller though. The heads I tried to shrink went back to regular size... I'll have to redunk those as well. Good thing I bought the 2L jug of acetone heh.
Ken Fashionistas No.193 on a YMY25 body. The colour match isn't perfect, but it's less noticeable IRL than in these photos.
Wiped his lipstick off but left his eyes alone.
Acetone shrink was 3:1 water ratio on a 48hr cycle over 8 days (24h in, 24h out).
Fashionistas No.138 on a No.167 MTM body for size comparison. 193's neck still sits a little wider than the YMY but it isn't super obvious and his head is secure so overall I'm happy with him.
Hadn't done doll related stuff in a bit. Last night, while watching a live stream about...world events..., I popped the heads on the $3 BTS Jin and V, then removed the hair.
It's been such a long time since I prepped a doll. At least a year and a half. I have The Jin head hanging out in a pickle jar of acetone now. (Something else I haven't done in a really long time)
I'm kind of hoping that his face paint will stay put because I think he's actually the best looking of the dolls. I don't think he actually looks like the guy himself but he's a pretty attractive little plastic person. The ideal outcome is that the head will just be less balloon-like with new hair after a reroot.
The Flickr group is not showing up in the search results now. I don't know what happened. Have any of you heard of this happening? I thought that maybe it was because I said it to requiring me to approve the submissions, but I change that back and it's still not there.
Edit: I sent off a complaint to Flickr. We'll see if they help.
