Just Finished Watching the 1st 2 Eps of House of Ashur...

Bitch. I'm in!! First, I didn't know Graham McTavish and Claudia Black were up in this?!

Nick E. Tarabay is chewing up scenes. We've fallen back into all the familiar; -the camp and the soap. We so far only have the barest hint to Neferet's (aka Achilea's) backstory, but she does fight. ...Realistically, given her gender, and size. ...She's not Mary Sue. And YES, to those who want to pretend they're not supporting this because Nagron isn't in it, is based in supporting queer rep and NOT because they are your favorite ship (which sure, I get but you can say that)... She stands under the rainbow. 🏳️‍🌈 I missed the cussing, the blood and guts, the intrigue, and the cadence of vaguely Shakespearean play-tinged sword and sandal pulp. If you watched Spartacus, then you already know what you're in for...but I'm just saying I'm surprised that they wrote Achillea doing what she did in one of these eps. It's shocking violence, even for this. We're not in the meat of the intrigue yet, but you can see who the chess pieces are.

So, #ThisIsARec so far. First two eps are up!! Support this show, if you're into what I've written. Once again, it IS gory, has a lot of nudity, sex, and violence... This is your warning, for those who DIDN'T watch Spartacus.

Y'all... fuck Hilara (stupid bitch on the right played brilliantly by Jamaica Vaughn).

Now... I was happy to ignore her at first; I figured she was just putting on an act to please her Dominus and survive the hell of slavery.

But very quickly, I realized this is really her. Not only is this dummy bitch clearly in love with Ashur, she's delulu enough to think he loves her too. And at first, the audience is kinda led to believe he does... until we see him have a love-at-first sight moment with a highborn Roman widow.

One of the things I'm absolutely loving about Spartacus: House of Ashur is the social commentary. If you blink, you'll miss it. Hilara is clearly our resident dim-witted pick-me. She's observant enough to psychoanalyze Achillia (Tenika Davis), but still deluded enough to think she and Ashur are truly more than master and slave.

Hilara is easily threatened by other women; even before Achillia attacks Ashur we can tell right off the bat that the Nubian goddess's mere presence rubs her the wrong way. Even before Achillia so much speaks, Hilara's facial expression betrays the fact she's bound and determined to hate this woman.

But the disrespect in yesterday's Episode 3 is what finally made me root for this bitch to die. To left is Messia (Ivana Baquero of Pan's Labyrinth legend), a fellow enslaved woman of Ashur's. Unlike Hilara, Messia is no pick-me. She has no delusions about her status in life. She bears Achillia no ill will and is subtly rooting for her Black Queen to succeed. And she's in love with Hilara (unfortunately).

So yesterday, Messia confesses her love to Hilara, who politely turns her down and tells Messia she's her "dearest friend". I felt bad for Messia, because she was obviously heartbroken, but I was also like, "Sis... you could do better. You deserve soooooo much better." And yesterday's episode proved that when Ashur and Hilara start to get it on right in front of Messia. Annoyed and disgusted, Messia eventually joins in because, again, slave. She's done this countless times before; it's literally how we're first introduced to her character.

It was so irritatingly disrespectful that I'm no longer waiting for Hilara's inevitable slave wake-up call. Next episode, I need someone to just go ahead and yeet her head first over the cliff. Wrap this up.

But this time, Hilara doesn't want her there. Like the Domina she is not and never will be, Hilara dismissively commands her "dearest friend" to "fetch wine" and then "wait until summoned".

I needed a second to gather my thoughts, but I AM READY to talk about this amazing, great, incredible, jaw-dropping episode. There is actually so much I wanna say

First things first, I never expected Messia to actually leave with Cornelia, and I fully take this to mean that they will both return for the next season. There is no way either of them could leave the show so unceremoniously, and Steven said in a Twitter post that Messia's story would expand over the seasons.

I can't wait to see the toxic romance (?) between these two, especially how Caesar's death will affect it. Also its kinda funny how Cornelia acts like she has separation anxiety lol calling for Messia the second she is not right by her

I'm sorry I can't help but the note it. There actually being a fucking strap in the finale episode. I guess I called it but I didn't actually think they were gonna. I was like

Another romance: I saw some people saying they delusionally believed/wanted Tarchon and Achillia to be a couple and I thought it was delusional as well so when I tell you my jaw fucking dropped. But like, it also feels so right??? So I'm not actually mad about it, this could be very interesting

It's amazing how much they made us hate Servius in such a short time. He is set to be the most unlikable villain of this already, fucking creep. Somebody save Cossutia and Viridia asap :(

The Viridia/Ashur kiss!!!! Well-deserved and great pay-off <3

I already like Galatea (?) so much, it seems like she will be a side character next season. Her and Satyrus was such a good duo, and their fight was super cool as well

On that note, the fact that they showed us Proculus is a highly skilled fighter....it's def gonna come down to a physical showdown between him and Ashur

The achillia vs. schytian fight.....what is there to say even. I think it's actually my favorite fight of the whole series, I could not sit still (I was acting like Hilara watching it lol). I usually don't care much for the fighting, but boy this one was insane. So well choreographed, so emotional, even the reactions from the characters and the crowd hyped me up so much. Like I imagined being a Roman peasant and actually witnessing this. I would talk about for years to come

The scene where Viridia sees the Hilara/Ashur hug and kiss and being distraught??? New storyline for season 2 incoming

Ahhh there's probably so much more to say but I'm still reeling from it. I need to rewatch it a few times and other things will probably come up. Overall 10/10 episode, I didn't even expect it to be so good.

i love how different corners of the internet experience this show so differently. i don’t think a single soul on reddit has clocked that Achillia is a lesbian, meanwhile the good citizens of tumblr dot com are placing bets as to when she’s going to get with Messia, a character she has not had a single interaction with yet
