San Giovanni is celebrated on the night between 23 and 24 June.
In recent years my life has changed in many ways so I decided to prepare for the first time "the water of San Giovanni" (in my language - Sardinian language - it is called "s'acqua de Is froris" / the water of the flowers)
At sunset, a mixed salad of herbs and wildflowers is sought and collected. There is no real rule in the choice of flowers and herbs, we generally let ourselves be inspired by our instincts by choosing among the species we have available such as hypericum, lavender, mugwort, mallow, rosemary, sage, cornflowers, poppies, roses or chamomile, depending on the blooms present in your area.
I chose mint, oregano, roses, lemon leaves, chamomile and sage that were in my garden.
After sunset, the harvested herbs are placed in water and left outdoors overnight, so they can soak up the morning dew. According to legend, herbs will collect dew and acquire magical properties from it.
On the morning of June 24, the water of San Giovanni is used to wash hands and face, in a sort of propitiatory and purifying ritual that will bring love, luck and health.
It is recommended to respect nature when collecting herbs, not to collect excessive quantities of specimens and not to uproot the plants ❤️
