The Hebrew (Polygrammate hebraeicum), Fishers Island NY, July 2018. 

Allegedly, the name of this moth comes from the markings on its forewings that bear similarity to characters in the Hebrew alphabet. The patterning may also help the moth blend into the background of lichen-covered trees or rocks during daylight hours.  The Hebrew (I did not come up with this name) is considered a specialist, recognizing only one species or lineage of plant as a food source. Caterpillars of the Hebrew moth feed exclusively on black tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica). 

Multiple generations in the Northeast, with adults common in June through August. Caterpillars overwinter as pupae.

“The Lily Caterpillar” Order Lepidoptera Superfamily Noctuoidea Family Noctuidae Subfamily Acronictinae

The Spodoptera genus is a very-common and infamous pest. This particular species, as the common name suggests, eats Lillies. The caterpillar can be found on: Cilvea miniata "Kaffir Lily" Crinum pedunculatum "Swamp Lily" Hymenocallis littoralis "Spider Lily" Hippeastrum species "Amaryllis" I've seen the moth's eggs many times in the past without realizing it. The moth lays her eggs in a mass, then covers them with buff/ginger-coloured hairs. This mass is usually about 7mm.

Harris’s Three Spot Moth (Harisimemna trisignata), Fishers island NY, July 2018.

A member of the dagger moth group, the moth earns its name from the three chocolate spots that can be seen on either forewing. With a distinctive appearance, it is hard to think how adults avoid being preyed upon by birds and other predators. It is possible that the pattern helps it blend into lichens on the bark of trees, although other closely related species mimic the appearance of bird droppings, which the Harris’s three spot could be a candidate. In comparison, the caterpillar bears resemblance to a bird dropping, even glistening as if freshly deposited.  Caterpillars aren’t picky eaters, feeding on many different kinds of woody plants, including apples, ash, hollies, honeysuckles, and willows. At least two generations in the east, with adults in late spring and again in summer. Caterpillars bore into the wood of their host plants in fall and overwinter as pupae.
