@mothmans-mothballs submitted: (sorry if this is a resubmission, but i think tumblr ate my first try) i wanted to share these cool-ass bugs i saw on a trip to japan! a possible stink bug, a wasp or ant mimicking spider, and some finger sized caterpillars that i'd love an id on if possible. idr prefecture names but it was close to kyoto

The first one is a true bug, but not a stink bug! Looks like a leaf-footed bug in the genus Homoeocerus. Agreed the spider is one of the ant-mimics in Myrmarachne. The first caterpillar looks like a ramie moth, Arcte coerula. And finally the last fuzzy fella is one of the dagger moths in the genus Acronicta :)

i found this knot grass moth caterpillar (Acronicta rumicis) calmly walking in the middle of the road without a single worry on its mind. i, on the other hand, know what a car is, so i moved it to a safer spot. my first mistake was assuming this thing wanted to make it to adulthood because when i was on my way back home a couple of hours later, it was in the middle of the road again

the second time i moved it, i used a tissue. this was another mistake on my part as it decided the tissue's texture was its new favorite thing and refused to let go for ages

An alder moth - Acronicta alni. I've been looking hopefully at alder leaves for years; finally found one of these guys. :-)

It’s amazing to think that such a strikingly-coloured and fluffy caterpillar grows into such a drab, dull-coloured moth (not to criticize the Sycamore moth though!! Its coat makes for some fantastic bark-like camouflague :3)
