LOGAN THE WOLF
Smart timing with the release of this Wolverine fan film, hot off the success of the animated series, X-MEN '97. Looking past the metal claws, which don't make sense for this story and time, the action and choreography stand out, lifting this film from similar fan films you might come across online. Give it a look and see if it captures any energy of that beloved Marvel anti-hero!
HIDARI
Stop-Motion + Action + Samurai... if you love any or all of these things, you will lose your mind watching Masashi Kawamura ‘s stunning film that oozes creativity in evert shot. An hour long version of this story would be something I’d very much like to see a streamer do as the genre audience will eat it up!
CONAN THE BARBARIAN
A chef’s kiss! I wouldn’t be opposed if this ended up as an animated series on Netflix. The visual style, the violence, and the Frank Franzetta vibe, is exactly what fans of Conan would want out of a more adult themed story. Hell, at this point they could probably get Arnold to voice the character just to push this over the top. Bravo!
SWORD OF THE DEAD
You had me at zombies and samurai. If you ever dreamed about what would happen if a horde of the undead showed up in an Akira Kurosawa film, director Stephen Vitale has the answer with this black and white treat. Serving as a proof-of-concept, hopefully Vitale gets to expand on this story on a larger scale. Also, props to the special effects team on creating decent looking zombies and a cool decapitated scene!
LA PESTE/THE PLAGUE
Sometimes a short knows exactly how to work and flourish within the format, executing a solid story/production on all accounts. LA PESTE (THE PLAGUE) is one of those, working as a proof-of-concept that easily can be fleshed out as a feature film. Watch it, enjoy it and hope there’s more at some point down the line.
BATMAN VERSUS THE TERMINATOR
If you need more than the title to get you to watch, then this ain’t for you. Instead of getting all of those crappy TERMINATOR sequels and reboots that Hollywood keeps churning out, here’s an animated feature with a pairing that would be money. Netflix or Hulu should get on it.
ADAM: EPISODE 3
Drama, complex characters, and originality, is what this film delivers in under 9 minutes. Most feature films can’t offer half of that with their bloated, two and a half-hour offerings. Neill Blomkamp and his team at Oats Studios keep spoiling viewers with some of the most original and interesting genre fare currently being made. Episode 4? Oh, hell yeah!
MONSTER ROLL
Los Angeles is a big sushi city, so it’s no surprise that sushi chefs would do battle with massive sea creatures to decide our fate! Filmmaker Dan Blank crafts something that’s entertaining, fun, and easily be seen on SyFy. Something’s gotta take over the SHARKNADO mantle...why not this?!!
