The Teal Pumpkin Project is a project started by FARE (food allergy research and education) to help make sure that kids with food allergies can still enjoy Halloween. Basically, if you plan on participating you set out a teal pumpkin (+ put your address on the Teal Pumpkin Map) which shows that you will provide non-food treats for kids with food allergies!

As someone who grew up with food allergies, Halloween was quite hard for me. I'd always have to give my entire bag of candy to my siblings (my mom always bought candy for me after the fact, but it was still sad to me and made me feel left out) because one improperly wrapped peanut product would make the entire bag of treats dangerous for me.

So, of course when I started handing out candy and found out about the teal pumpkin project, I HAD to participate. I've been handing out non-food treats since I was 15? around there? so like 6+ years :D

Over the last few years I've been slowly increasing what I do for Teal Pumpkin Project things. in 2023 I handed out gift bags to kids with food allergies and delivered one gift bag to a very sad little girl with Covid (left it on her doorstep and talked with her through the window)

This year, I want to expand my activities to encompass any kid in my town unable to trick-or-treat due to disabilities :) wish me luck <3

Did I spend 45 minutes putting together a DIY strap for this so I can wear it over my shoulder since the strap Hershey uses to carry it is too short? Yes. Did I spend about 20 minutes of that time making holes in it so I could adjust it and have the inhaler case clipped as well? Yes. Is this all because I am taking a risk and going apple picking tomorrow? Yep. Catch me in the orchard with my medication and my cane picking the best damn apples in the whole fucking orchard evwn though I don't really like apples! It's fucking fall everyone! (Also I really did write out a whole long ass message in the group chat to let my partner and my best friend know where each medication is located and what info is important in case of emergency and also instructions for how to use an epi pen just in case. It might be extra but I would rather them know than not)

The fact that, legally, schools in nearly every state can have epinephrine on hand, without having a kid need them, and yet they don't is baffling to me.

Over 24% of epinephrine use was on kids without a previous allergy diagnosis.

Almost all anaphylactic deaths occur in people who did not know they had allergies. Epinephrine is the only medication that can counteract the (often life threatening) symptom of anaphylaxis.

Every single school I have been to had been entirely unprepared to deal with allergic reactions. I had to provide epinephrine auto injectors and my elementary school didn't give any teachers training on epipens until after the principal had to use an epipen on me (due to her not knowing what to do, she panicked, was traumatized, and quit that school year.)

Schools can get epinephrine for far cheaper than regular people can. Why don't they utilize this? Why do kids have to die because of a lack of education?

What's incredibly jarring is most schools weren't allowed to carry non prescription epinephrine until 2013

HEY! Do you want to help me help kids with disabilities, who can't trick or treat, have a fun Halloween?

I need ~$25 USD to order the non-food treats I have picked out, but this order will likely last me a few years as what I have picked out are all bulk (with around 36-48 items each)! I specifically picked out fidget toys this year.

I usually get ~5 kids to make treat bags for. I am hoping for more this year but ~5 is a good estimate for now.

I do this EVERY YEAR so left over toys/fidgets aren't wasted!
