"A clinical trial studying severe allergic reactions in the U.K. is being called “life-transforming.”
Five United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) hospitals are participating in the £2.5 million ($3.2 million) trial to help patients live with their food allergies.
The study is being funded by the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, Sky News reported. The foundation was formed in the memory of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who died in 2016 after eating a baguette that had sesame in it...
The trial is studying clinical oral immunotherapy treatments in which patients are given small doses of the food to which they are allergic to build up their tolerance. The food is given under medical supervision by trained staff, The Telegraph reported.
The study has 139 people participating who have allergies to peanuts or cow’s milk. They range in age from 2 to 23 years old, the BBC reported.
The Food Standards Agency said 2 million people in the U.K. have a diagnosed food allergy. In the U.S., about 5.5. million children have a food allergy, the National Institutes of Health reported.
One 11-year-old who was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy when he was an infant can now eat six peanuts.
A 5-year-old with a milk allergy can drink 120 ml of milk every day and can enjoy a daily hot chocolate, the BBC reported.
“To have a patient who has had anaphylaxis [Note: Anaphylaxis is an allergic reaction so severe that it's potentially fatal without immediate treatment. It is very common with peanut allergies in particular. x] to 4mls of milk to then tolerate 90mls within six to eight months is nothing less than a miracle,” Sibel Donmez-Ajtai, a pediatric allergy consultant and principal investigator at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said, according to Sky News.
The final results of the study are expected to be released in 2027.
Similar studies have been conducted in the U.S. To find one, visit FoodAllergy.org.
Earlier this year, the NIH released the findings of a study of an antibody treatment that would help children consume allergy triggers safely."

Thighs and Mitts
Stray Kids x reader
Requested by @daddys-lilttle-witch : First off I adore you and your writing!! I have chronic urticaria, and it's starting to act up. Lots of nausea, hives, and high chance of using an EpiPen which hurts, a lot. I was hoping you could write one where the ninth member is having these issues, and how the kids take care of her. (Totally not projecting) 🩷🩷
It’s no secret about your urticaria, in the industry. The staff were aware, as well as your group. They were all very considerate of all your symptoms, and could even be… too considerate.
Since it has been flaring up lately, with you oftentimes being covered with hives and rashes, things have been busy. The moment you complain or even mention hives, Chan is worried.
“Are you sure it’s not deadly?” he asks for the millionth time, looking you over for the hives.
“Chan,” you say in exasperation. “If it gets too bad I’ll tell you. Don’t worry yourself sick, okay?”
Hyunjin studies you carefully, eyes narrowed. “Is it time? Is it acting up?”
“Uh, yeah?” you hesitantly answer. He dashes off without saying another word, leaving you confused. You face Chan with an eyebrow raised. “What’s he up to?”
Chan sighs heavily. “I don’t even ask anymore.”
You only have to spend five minutes scrolling on your phone to wait for Hyunjin. He struts back into the room with his hands on his waist, jutting his hip out to the side.
“What are you wearing?” you demand, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Hyunjin waves his hand at his thigh strap, something that a girl in a black dress might wear with a gun. But instead of a gun, he has an EpiPen.
“In case of emergencies!” Hyunjin exclaims, rolling his eyes. “Obviously. I need to be like Lara Croft.”
“Hot?” Jisung chimes in, staring at Hyunjin’s thighs.
Hyunjin shifts uncomfortably. “No. Armed at all times?”
“Oh.” Jisung deflates. “Well you didn’t have to be so mean about it. You could’ve played along for a while!”
“I’m not role-playing with you!” Hyunjin snaps, recoiling with a disgusted look on his face. “Why do you always have to ruin things! We were having a nice, supportive moment before you came along?”
“Supportive?” Jisung echoes curiously. “Supporting what?”
Chan places his hands on your shoulders. “The chronic urticaria? Remember?”
Jisung covers his mouth in horror. “It’s flaring up? Right now at this moment?”
“Yeah?” you warily say.
Then Jisung is ripping the EpiPen off Hyunjin’s thigh holster, lunging at you. You shriek and dodge him as he chases after you.
“Get back here!” Jisung shouts. “I’m trying to save your life!”
“That’s not how it works!” Chan yells, trying to grab Jisung before he unnecessarily stabs you with such a serious medication. “She’s fine right now!”
Jisung skids to a halt. “Oh. Really?”
“Really,” Hyunjin monotones, snatching the EpiPen back. He tucks it back into his thigh strap with a scowl directed at Jisung.
And when you actually need to use the EPiPen, they’re there. They’re laying you out on the floor as Chan uncaps the medication, and you’re dreading it.
It’s a huge fucking needle, so who wouldn’t dead it? It’s massive and hurts a lot.
Felix squeezes your hand, smiling softly down at you. “You’re okay. Deep breath, okay?”
Jeongin is holding your other hand, and he reaches out to wipe a tear away. “In and out, remember? You’ve got this.”
You’re shuddering with fear, clenching your eyes shut. You can hear shuffling before Chan suddenly speaks up.
“Um, which side is it again?” he asks, much to your displeasure.
“Blue,” Seungmin answers, making your eyes pop back open.
“What?” you say. “Uh, guys-“
Changbin scoffs. “You moron. It’s blue.”
“Orange,” Seungmin argues.
“Blue!” Changbin cries. “You’re going to kill her! Her life is on the line!”
“You guys panicking is freaking me out,” you seriously say, only to be shushed by Changbin.
“It’s blue!” Changbin loudly says. “The saying is about blue skies and orange thighs!”
“We’re not the fucking Lorax!” Seungmin hisses out, waving his arms around wildly.
Then there’s an intense pain in your thigh before you even realize it. Felix pats your face with his free hand, murmuring assurances. Jeongin is squeezing your hand rhythmically to distract you from it.
“It’s blue to the sky, orange to the thigh,” Chan simply informs the group, discarding of the used EpiPen. “And let’s get you to the hospital now after using an EpiPen.”
Changbin helps you stand, while Hyunjin brings out a packed bag. When everyone gives him a curious look, he shrugs.
“I packed a go bag just in case something ever happened,” Hyunjin explains and he throws the bag over his shoulder.
Jisung peers into the bag curiously. “Why is there a pacifier in here?”
“In case the emergency was ever someone going into labour.” Hyunjin shrugs and goes out the door.
“What?” Minho squints in disbelief. “That’s insane. None of us are even pregnant, let alone close to labour.”
Felix snorts. “Speak for yourself.”
Chan raises an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”
Felix blinks. “Oh- No, not me! I was just saying in general that we don’t know what everyone else has been up to…” He side-eyes Jisung pointedly.
“Let’s just get to the hospital,” Seungmin tiredly says. Everyone files out the door, and Jeongin tells you the entire way that he nearly passed out when he saw how huge the needle was, and how impressed he is.
Sometimes, the nausea gets bad enough that you spend your morning hunched over a toilet. When Minho comes to check on you, he pulls a hair tie off a shelf and ties your hair out of your face.
“Gonna throw up?” Minho asks, crouching next to you.
“I dunno,” you groan. “I feel like I will, but I haven’t yet.”
Minho sits with you until the feeling passes, sitting in silence with you. Occasionally he’ll lean over to show you a picture of his cats.
“If you get another cat, will you name it after me?” you teasingly ask as you stand up.
“Ew,” Minho instantly says, face scrunching up. When you narrow your eyes, he forces a smile. “I mean… Of course!”
You absently scratch the back of your neck, looking over at him. “I still don’t feel up to breakfast. Did you eat already?”
“Yeah,” he replies. “Did you wanna watch something together?”
You nod and follow him to the couch, where Jeongin is already sitting. He hums a greeting when you approach, attention focused on his phone.
Minho throws something random on, rolling his eyes when a conveniently attractive man bumps into the protagonist. “It’s so cliché!” he angrily says.
“That’s the point! It’s predictable for a reason!” you argue.
“Is the reason to keep me bored?” Minho crosses his arms.
“No, it’s so that you don’t have to think too much! It’s a soothing, background show! To watch when you do laundry!” You huff and scratch at your wrist.
“You’re getting hives,” Jeongin notes, gazing at your red and bumpy skin.
“It’s so itchy,” you mutter in frustration.
“Don’t scratch it,” Minho scolds.
You open your mouth to tell him that he doesn’t control you, and before you know it you’re wearing oven mitts. You can’t seem to get them off with the Velcro feature they have.
“Haha,” Changbin teases as he walks past. “You’re stuck in the mitts!”
Then he’s pouting on the couch next to you with his very own set that Minho and Jeongin wrestled him into.
