Description

Panoptigenic systems were formed either partially or completely due to experiences like surveillance, a lack of privacy, or the fear of being watched. It is an adaptive (and more often than not, traumagenic) origin.

Some examples of these experiences may include:

Being stalked.

Needing to stay closeted, or the fear of being outed.

Growing up with "helicopter" or strict parents, especially if they monitor your activity online.

Having your personal space, boundaries, or privacy violated (physically or emotionally).

Using — especially growing up on — the Internet; issues relating to cybersecurity in the age of things like generative AI and age verification laws.

A fear, phobia, or delusion that someone is monitoring you, including as a result of schizospec conditions.

Being told that your abuser, or a higher being, knows what you're doing/thinking at all times.

Religious trauma relating to deities being omniscient (all-knowing).

Government-based surveillance in countries under oppressive regimes.

Some members of panoptigenic systems may do everything in their power to give themselves or others in the system privacy, while others might give up on the idea entirely because it seems impossible to achieve. Within the system, there may be an unusually heavy focus on keeping secrets from outsiders. The system may come off as aloof, secretive, or withdrawn.

Etymology + pronunciation

pan like "panel", op like "optical", ti like "tickle", jehn like "Jennie", ik like the end of "Rubik".

Based on the concept of the Panopticon (Greek pân, meaning "all", and optikós, meaning "visible"), a particular design for prisons so that its guards could observe the prisoners at all times + the suffix "-genic", used to describe the cause or origin of something.

Flag

All blues: Knowledge; the varying shades of light and dark represent access to knowledge (such as that about the system) and lack thereof, respectively. Yellow: Resembles a spotlight shining onto someone; references the yellow on hazard signs, symbolising alertness and vigilance.

Circles/curved designs: Alludes to the Panopticon's intended layout, with the person at the centre having a full 360˚ view of the prisoners. Yellow circle+triangle thing: Looks like a spotlight beam, pointing down at the person being watched. Also resembles a keyhole, referencing the theme of security (or lack thereof), or an anonymous profile picture (alluding to the Internet/cybersecurity). Dark 4-pointed star: In the first flag, it represents the one being watched. In the second, it represents the one watching. Navy/black bars (second design): Resembles the black bars you see at the top of your screen when watching a movie, invoking the feeling of being watched or "onscreen".

Whyyyyyy are there no safe spaces for Adaptive Systems or Traumatized Systems in general without some form of Endo hate?

We’re somewhat blocked out of nearly every space we’ve seen because we don’t have or are mostly sure we’re unfit for the criteria of an official disorder, even if we may have emotional amnesia, or count as endogenic by association ( not fully 100% purely Traumagenic, fall under Adaptive and some very similar labels, including two of the big three being that and Neurotraumagenic, but also Amitigenic ). Even if we aren’t the type they’re thinking of most of the time, it makes us feel sick with empathy

If we could just have one other safe place with a focus on trauma and recovery that doesn’t hate on anyone, that would be amazing. Specifically Discord if we’re talking best ideal. We’ve looked for server after server and nothing. Not even something just for just any Adaptive Systems

We’re in one place we won’t name to call out, but they allow PluralKit only to medically recognized disordered systems ( DID, OSDD1, USD/USDD ), and it feels super scummy. We’re still glad to have a place at all, but we’re stuck without an accessibility tool we use nearly anywhere else. Maybe we should be grateful we have a place, but all we can think about right now is that even if we are somewhat welcomed, we’re also being unintentionally othered and are scared to speak up about it in fear of being kicked out of the only place we feel safer venting save for here

Fixagenic : A system whose members form due to hyperfixations, exclusive to those with neurodevelopmental disorders

Friendgenic : a term for headmates that were formed out of another headmate's desire for a sourcemate to be around or in the system with them. This desire doesn't have to exclusively come from a friendship, and it includes any other type of relationship, such as a rival, caretaker, ally in combat, romantic partner, queer-platonic partner, family member, or any other terms used by the headmates to describe their relationship.

O-Genic : a neurogenic origin under OC-Genic, specifically for plurality caused by obsessions.
