The BMC ADO16 family was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis following the success of the Mini, featuring a BMC 1098cc A series engine mounted transversely and driving through the front wheels. The Mark I was produced in all forms between 1962-67 The Mark II introduced the a larger 1275cc version of the engine which was sold alongside the 1098cc engined cars. The Mark II appeared in Austin, Morris, Wolseley, MG, Vanden Plas and the Riley versions. With the introduction of the Mark II Riley dropped the Kestrel name, in July 1969 the Riley version of the ADO 16 was dropped, and brought an end to the Riley name. at the same time the Austin/Morris 1300 GT was announced. Apart from the Princess the Wolseley was the best trimmed and equipped of the range with performance between the Austin/Morris and quicker MG.
