“Danaus was settled by Belus in Libya, and Egyptus in Arabia; but Egyptus subjugated the country of the Melampods and named it Egypt. Both had children by many wives; Egyptus had fifty sons, and Danaus fifty daughters. As they afterwards quarrelled concerning the kingdom, Danaus feared the sons of Egyptus, and by the advice of Athena he built a ship, being the first to do so, and having put his daughters on board he fled.

"Aegyptus had 50 sons, and his brother Danaus had 50 daughters. Danaus fearing the sons of his brother, fled with his daughters to Argos in Peloponnesus. Thither he was followed by the sons of Aegyptus who demanded his daughters for their wives. Danaus complied with their request, but to each of his daughters he gave a dagger, with which they were to kill their husbands in the bridal night. All the sons of Aegyptus were thus murdered, with the exception of Lynceus who was saved by Hypermnestra."

Women and water somehow intrigued Waterhouse so it is no surprise that he painted the Danaïdes. These 50 daughters of King Danaus were forced to marry the 50 sons of his rival King Aegyptus with the task to kill them in their wedding night.  After the killings, the women were sentenced to death and in the underworld they were condemned to fill a large jar with a big hole in it.  Only one daughter refused to assassinate her husband because she truly loved him and this couple started the dynasty of the new rulers of Argos.

The first shown painting is regarded as a study of the second one that was completed two years later.  Being only discovered in 1989, it is nevertheless a painting in its full right. The later version was sold to the magnate James Murray and ended up in the Aberdeen Art Gallery in 1927.

(Been a while, hasn’t it? Anyway...) 

Ibrahim Khalid, Vulpera Transfer Student: 

What he’s from: Tales of Jade-Realm (specifically, “Tales of Scholomance Academy”) (with a bit of “Hearthstone”).

Background:

Born in Hamunaptra/Aegyptus, a part of Jade-Realm similar to Egypt (and bordering the Lands of Fire and Gold, a kingdom apparently straight out of “1001 Arabian Knights”), Ibrahim had long dwelled within his parents’ caravan. He was clever and cunning, with quite a bit of curiosity and kindness. Among his favorites stories that he’d heard involved the “Beggar King”, a lucky and cunning hero who was poor in material wealth (due to him giving up all the wealth he gained to the poor), but wealthy in friends and kindness, and a bit of influence, as well. For this reason, even beggars were treated with kindness in the Lands of Fire and Gold, as well as (to an extent) Hamunaptra/Aegyptus.

Perhaps the luck of the Beggar King was smiling on him, when he gave some spare coinage to a beggar, for some time later, he saved a wealthy-looking stranger from a large and heavy falling object. This stranger turned out to be a wizard who had ties to Scholomance Academy (a great school, not just for wizards, but other groups and classes, among other things). Wanting to repay the Vulpera boy’s kindness, he ultimately convinced Ibrahim’s parents to let him attend Scholomance.

Now, Ibrahim has arrived at Scholomance, and is eager to learn. If he studies hard, and manages to persevere, he might just survive… and learn!

How he is like me:

We’re both smart and kind, and a bit curious. Also, we’re different from others (he’s from a distant land, and I have autism).

The Prince of Egypt has some (somewhat surface level) similarities to the story of Danaus and Aegyptus, since the movie added a brotherly conflict between Moses and Ramses that wasn’t there in any Abrahamic religion, I only now realized that after looking through concept art of the movie to look for references drawing Danaus and Aegyptus.

Some similarities:

- Brothers who were raised as Egyptian royalty coming into conflict when they got older.

- One becomes Pharaoh and uses his power to oppress his brother’s ppl (in Moses case his entire ethnic group and Danaus his daughters).

- The brother tries to protect his ppl but also avoid bloodshed by fleeing Egypt.

- The Pharaoh doesn’t accept this and chases after them for his own ego.

- The Pharaoh’s son/s dies due to his stubbornness and cruelty.

The story of the Danaids and the Aegyptides is actually a great example for how “protect your daughter” means nothing if you don’t also “educate your son”. Danaus did almost everything right, teaching his daughters to be wary of lustful men and even physically keeping them away from danger by making them flee said lustful men, but in the end none of that mattered bc Aegyptus taught his sons to view women as objects and it’s their own kin no less so just imagine how these sons treat women they aren’t related to.
