The trees stood dark and skeletal against it, unmoving in the windless air, and the cold leaked through the glass. Despite the date on the calendar, spring had yet to manifest itself. Stanley sipped his too-sweet coffee and eyed the treeline."

“Will Stanford Pines ever forgive you?” he asked, voice sliding from game-show cheer into something far more venomous.

A sudden hush fell over the set. The spotlights all converged on Stanley. The other contestants turned their heads in sync to stare directly at him. Even the audience stilled, all those grinning faces now perfectly fixed, waiting for Stan’s answer.
