Furthermore, does this imply that in another life, Stanley would have been as successful of a cartoonist as Charles Schulz? With lil’ Stanley being something that, had Stan continued making it, could have been as culturally influential as Peanuts?

hello tempus! i don’t know your religious or cultural background, nor do i know the religious backgrounds of kerink or other people involved in the “redemption” conversation, so please forgive me if i make assumptions!

it seem to me that while many human bill or deposited bill writers may be writing through a culturally christian/protestant work ethic “redemption” lens while writing human or depowered bills, it also seems like you default to reading that same culturally christian “redemption” theme into human bill stories.

I have a lot of thoughts on how jewish versus culturally or religiously christian fans write/interpret the pineses and bill, and as a jewish enjoyer of human bill, neither redemption nor justice (punitive or otherwise) have much to do with why i enjoy that format of story.

i want to see the argument with humanity as a concept, but i’m not interested in attaching a moral value to it. I’ve also read fics by jewish writers which fit better into this “argument” lens than into the “redemption” lens previously discussed.

I’m not trying to stop anybody from exploring themes or patterns, I just want to point out an additional pattern that seems to be being overlooked!

Yes, absolutely! Thanks for bringing this to my attention. When I'm talking about "redemption" or human Bill, I can only actually refer to my own experience of those types of stories, and I've read very few of them deeply. I want to criticize the white Christian American dogma I see dominating these styles of stories without misattributing that dogma to stories that are not part of that cultural zeitgeist.

There are a ton of fics out there, and I hope there's a good mix of cultural perspectives! And, since most of these characters are explicitly Jewish, I'm very interested in picking out and highlighting any stories that feature Jewish philosophy or are being told through a Jewish lens.

Again, thanks so much. I appreciate the point in the right direction. I still have so much research to do about redemption as a concept before I can actually understand this fandom phenomenon.

you’re in luck, @megarhyssa-sp, because i have both my favorite reconstructionist jewish ethical framework AND two excellent fics which write human/depowered bill through an exploratory, nuanced, and non-redemptive lens to share with you!

Tikkun Olam, or the Work of Repairing The World, is a principle of collective responsibility that everyone owes it to themselves and each other to make the world better. A common saying is “it isn’t on you to finish the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.”

A Promise And A Threat by @clarisimart is, among many other things, a beautiful and intricate interrogation of how post-canon Billford could be an intentional choice on both Ford and Bill’s part.

A Human Condition by @sapphosscribe is a super-slow-burn human bill fic which treats humanity as transformative and limiting, but not necessarily punitive. it also asks questions about how Ford might react cruelly to Bill’s own past cruelty, and how that might impact his self-image.

They’re both absolutely worth a read and I know that Promise and A Threat at least is written by an agnostic Jewish writer!
