I'm gonna (remembers suicide jokes are bad) write a comprehensive essay on why the current age rating system in shows/movies both harms the quality of kids' media and development, limits artists, and is a product of corporate greed and fragility (remembers no one cares what I think) but I'll do it for myself not for engagement (remembers wanting engagement is normal) and you all have to read it (remembers performative activism is meaningless without action toward change) and help me blow up Hollywood with a lot of bombs
Trying to make friends with people but they don't gaf about age restrictions and think CHILDREN should be watching stuff like Hazbin Hotel, GoT etc. 😨

Played a roblox game with a friend the other day. Mainly kids under 13 play it. We've roleplayed on it since we were very very young, like 10, and still do.
I was waiting on them, and I saw this person in a Hazbin Hotel cosplay. I think they're a young adult or something bc they're in my chat range.
I go up to them "Hey, this is a kids game. You really shouldn't be wearing that."
And they're like, "oh but I'm 14."
I reply, "You shouldn't be watching that. You're also practically advertising it to these other kids who may not know it, and look it up."
And then they say, "I'm sorry, I'm actually 8."
I go to respond but some person comes up to us. They say they're 19 in their bio. They started arguing and yelling at me for "harrassing" this little kid when they should be "allowed to watch whatever they want".
I'm HORRIFIED. I try not to engage with them but they're actively telling this 8 y/o not to listen to me, because "they have a degree in psychology and it doesn't affect young minds", WHICH ISN'T TRUE?? Like there's reasons age ratings exist... why roblox put in the chat age groups (even though I hate them), and why kids aren't allowed in ADULT spaces.
Someone else sees, talks about reporting them, and when I say I already reported them, they switch up. They play the "autism" card, and all the sudden agree with me and it was all some misunderstanding 🤯 They tell me to "undo" the report, and FRIEND me...
It was such a crazy, sickening experience.
I saw another post by someone I followed about how they won't be putting an age rating on their work because even children should be able to judge if they're "mature enough".
It's interesting how differently ESRB and PEGI go about setting age ratings for video games.
In the USA, a game will be only for ages 13 and up if it has fantasy violence, mild blood, mild swearing, simulated gambling, suggestive themes, and if the characters can be seen drinking.
But in the EU, the exact same game could be marked for ages 12 and up, an entire year younger.
And the only parts they warn you about are the gambling and the violence.
None of the sex or the alcohol or blood or anything else is an issue!
Slightly off topic, but the back of the boxes will even display different selling points. On the left is the American release, and on the right is Europe. It's interesting that the American box highlights what this version of the game changes compared to it's previous version, while the European box highlights generic basic stuff that you'd find in ANY game.
And for games released in Souteastern Asian regions, there IS no age rating system on the box!
Here I have some Kamen Rider games released in Southeast Asia (I think these copies are from Malaysia?).
And as you can see, apparently parents buying games for their kids over there don't need to know about what sort of sensitive content might be in the game.
Do they only reserve age ratings for games that should only ever be played by adults over there? I don't know. I hope to learn more someday.

I forgot to add the tag for it - but honestly? TSR is really 18+. It's very dark. Please do not play if you are squeamish with gory details!

I decided to make this a separate post, but I think Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is tricky in the sense that it doesn't meet the criteria for a 16+ movie, but it's also clearly rough to be 13+. Especially what Rocket went through as a kid was traumatic and it kinda worries me that I saw some around 10 years old kids in the audience without their parents (or at least I didn’t see any adult with them). Everyone of course are different and it wasn’t necessarily too bad for them but personally I would have been really scared if I had gone to watch something that brutal at such a young age. Obviously, being in my early twenties now, the movie wasn't scary despite the dark themes, but as an early adolescent it would have been a whole different thing
I need some advice from those who’ve read the Inheritance Games.
I know an eleven year old who wants to read the books. The official age rating is twelve and up, but we have it categorized as YA fiction. Is the twelve and up an okay thing to stand by?
