Prompt: Power couple!DeanCas. Preferably in law enforcement, at university, or any kind of occupation with a high profile
To an outsider, Cas’ expression might be mistaken for stoic solemnity. Dean knows his husband, though, knows he’s furious. As soon as the nurse is done taking Dean’s vitals and leaves, Cas is gonna tear into him.
That’s why, as soon as she’s crossed the threshold, Dean is talking. “You know, most people would be honored to be married to a hero.”
“What hero?” Cas says, voice that deadly calm it always gets when he’s righteously pissed. “All I see is an idiot who thinks his body can absorb bullets.”
Dean knows he’s gonna regret saying this, but, “Technically-”
“You know goddamn well what I mean,” Cas snaps. “Why are you so reckless? Why do you insist on throwing your life away in the stupidest, most irresponsible…”
He trails off, breathing sharply through his nose. Dean frowns, feeling a little wounded (in more ways that the obvious). “Cas, I did it to save that kid’s life.”
“That kid was a criminal,” Cas reminds him, but there’s no real heat behind it.
“And he lives on to make terrible decisions for another day, thanks to me.” Dean holds out his hand, knowing that despite how pissed he is Cas isn’t gonna refuse him this small comfort. Cas sighs before taking it, intertwining their fingers. “And for the record, the media is calling me a hero.”
Cas snorts, squeezing Dean’s hand tight. “One newscaster called you ‘heroic’. One.”
“I think I saw ‘dashing’ somewhere, too. And ‘fearless’. ‘Devastatingly handsome’ has definitely been thrown around but that’s nothing new-”
“Dean,” Cas cuts him off gently. Dean snaps his mouth shut, feeling chastened. “Just… promise me you’ll be more careful next time.”
It’s not a promise Dean can keep. They both know that, because they’ve both been in this position more times than either cares to count. Dean probably more, because Cas is right. He is reckless. But when you work for the FBI, risking your life kind of comes with the territory.
“You knew what you were getting into when you married me,” Dean jokes weakly.
Cas purses his lips, but doesn’t argue. He raises Dean’s hand, kisses the back of it softly.
