Happy 43 Birthday to B. J. Britt.

I’m Still Pissed with the Producers of Agents of SHIELD
So I was thinking back to the exact moment where the SkyeWard canon ship died i.e. when Skye shot Ward in the back and I realized something. There was no reason she had to do that. Ward trusted her and loved her, he wouldn’t have hurt her, and she knew this, he wasn’t going to hurt the rest of the team, they could have actually just thrown him back into a cell or you know done the right thing and turned custody of a terrorist over to the federal government (far be it from me to say we should let a criminal, a man who really did murder his own family, to walk free, but still SHIELD didn’t have to keep him). Or and here’s something that only Skye herself could have done and would have gone a long way in terms of character development: she could have forgiven him. Skye would have been the only one to understand how Ward was manipulated because she had been treated the same way by her ex-boyfriend (who got kicked off the plane in China, I think, but is probably still alive, still better way to leave the show than Garret). Ward was desperate for a father figure just like Skye was desperate for a family and both Garret and Miles (that was the ex-boyfriend’s name, thanks google!) took advantage of that. Skye was forgiven by Coulson for still going back to Miles and she eventually became the badass agent we know now, but Ward didn’t get to have that. Had Skye forgiven him, not only would it have been an awesome parallel to her and Coulson showing just how much Skye thinks of Coulson as a father figure, but it meant that Skye was growing as a person. She knew that she had been manipulated by Miles and she knows that Ward was manipulated and worse by Garret, thus making Ward a victim as well, and rather than blame Ward for the actions of Garret she could forgive him, letting go of the anger she had clung onto for so long and just being free of it, so when she does go down into that hole with Raina, she’s at peace with everything in case they do both die, but instead they still live. Maybe Trip would have still died or maybe, maybe Ward would have followed Skye down. Maybe Ward would have tried to destroy the diviner instead and wound up dying, trying to save the world in the process, redeeming himself in his last act, and allowing another amazing agent, aka Antione “I deserved better than literally everything that happened to me” “Trip” Triplett. They could have allowed Ward the death of a hero, an imperfect man trying to make up for his past sins. Or maybe, who knows, maybe Trip still dies, but instead Ward vows to make sure that Trip’s sacrifice isn’t in vain. Maybe Ward swears to be the kind of man that Trip was, and maybe that allows him to tell Fitzsimmons that he thought the craft was supposed to float, that he’s sorry, that he knows he’ll never be able to truly make up for what he has done, but he’s going to spend the rest of his life trying to set things right. Maybe he tells May his weak spots so she’ll have the upper hand in a fight with him, maybe he tells Coulson to put the same bracelet Skye wore on him, so that way he can’t do anything about getting more intel for HYDRA or whatever. Maybe he actually does still sleep in his old cell, I don’t know. But it could have prevented so much of the bad shit that happened to SHIELD if Skye had just not shot Ward three times in the goddamned back. Maybe things could have been better, I certainly think the show would have been better and would have given Skye/Daisy Johnson more character development earlier on, and possibly even saved her so much of the pain she had to endure. Simmons might not have become as hardened as she did, Fitz might have been able to get better psychologically faster, maybe SHIELD would have been a better agency, but we’ll never get the chance to know that. Because instead of forgiveness, she gave him even more of a reason to target SHIELD, she gave him even more motive to become the monster that he died as. The day Grant Ward really died, was the day that Skye shot him three times in the back and walked away as if it meant nothing. As if he has meant nothing. That was the day that Grant Ward really died.
“Trip? Haven’t heard that nickname since high school. How’d you know?”
“Felt right.”
